I thought that these photos would help clear up the confusion about rad fan colours. These cars were built in small numbers and ferrari installed what ever the suppliers delivered. The key to restoring these cars is experience, never say never Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have seen these Lucas fan motors in both hammer grey as seen in the photos on 308's and Boxers and hammer silver on earlier Dino's. I do not believe that Lucas was tied to a particular colour but these are the 2 I have seen. Here is a link to the fan motor restoration I did on a Dino: Dino 246 Restoration Blog: Radiator fan motor restoration. Giving our Lucas units new life.
How could there be doubt? I can tell if something was painted or not cant you? Never seen those on a boxer in 12 years of looking but I guess a 365 may have or they may have been changed over the years, who knows? If in doubt hit them with spray paint from home depot? If I was lazy maybe. Sure its a pain to take the magnets and bushing out of three motors then send them out for plating but its worth the effort to get a lasting finish that wont get stone chips and found on 99.999999% of the boxers built.
cute, but likely only to you only. this is a discussion about correct finishes. weigh in if you have an opinion or evidence on that, but save the rest of us the childish playground comments and put it in a pm.
Just a quick question.... Do you run a restoration shop? It seems you know a fair amount about BB's. what finishes have you personally seen on the fan motors? Maybe your input could put this to rest...
I guess it is the same with all vintage Ferraris, you ever can really tell were the change was made. Was it during an expresso break, lunch break or," Hey Giuseppe, pass me a couple of fans will you." darn these fans are different color. "don't worry Tomasso, they will be fine, they look the same, the turn the same direction and it cools the radiatore" "No one will know." It has been well docmented when restoring older Ferraris, there is no real standardization Just when you think you have seen it all. "you haven't" Who would've of thought,... baby blue backing pates on a BB. Just thank Giuseppe and Tomasso.
Under normal Ferrari circumstances I would be in agreement but here we are talking about fans that are mass produced by the Lucas corporation in England and have been produced for a very long period of time. These fans were used in all sorts of British cars and have been Ferrari's choice in everything from Dino's, Daytona's, Boxer's, 308's, and more. The motors were purchased, yanked out of a box, and installed thereby negating the 'Giuseppe' effect. I researched these motors in detail during my restoration and the best information I have is that they were painted in silver hammertone from the early to mid seventies, a darker grey hammertone from the mid 70's to the early 80's and sliver or gold zinc plated after that. These motors were a somewhat common replacement item so even a motor that was replaced in say 1988 would be 25 years old now and could be mistaken for original. I confirmed some of my colour findings with a Lucas motor expert in the Jaguar community as these were widely used on these cars as well.
I replaced the original fans a couple of years ago, but I stored them. they have been black as you see the rest of the color Image Unavailable, Please Login
