Hi, After some advice about 1979 512 BB wipers.....(know this might not be a very interesting topic as most boxers owners probably hardly ever use the wipers!) Father bought car about a month back and wiper blades need replacing (just nice to have them working properly)... got him to measure them up and I bought some bosch ones of the correct sizes. The short blade I got is for a volvo 850 headlight wiper - 8" as this was the only one of the correct size I could source after doing some online research. Could anyone please say whether these should fit and are the correct type? Reason I ask is that I gave my father the blades last time I saw him and when we spoke the other day he said he is not convinced they are the correct fitment. Any help appreciated! cheers, Matt. p.s great car - drove it back from the dealer we bought from after we had to go back after some gear changing niggles - engine had been out for service and the rods were not quite aligned properly... so selecting 3rd sometimes gave you 5th, for example.
good topic...i have meant to post this in the past...thank you for taking the initiative. my wiper has never been used during my 6 years of ownership but do need to be replaced. i am interested in the responses. pcb
I'm interested in this discussion as well. I HAVE used my wipers, in fact the first three or four times I used them, the bolt holding the arm on came loose every time. So I suggest carrying a socket with you to tighten that up, should you need to use them.
Yeah would be nice to get some info on this - someone must have replaced the wipers! I guess if anything most owners probably just replace only the rubber part of the blade rather than the blade and 'holder'. Trouble is after a while the 'holder' part loses its spring and replacing the rubber doesn't give as good a result as it could. I'm going round to 'tinker' with the wipers tomorrow....as well as replacing rear silencer on my girlfriends ford focus ( oooh exciting! ).... so I'll take a close look myself and see what the fitment looks like. cheers, Matt.
replaced both wiper blades 04-04-02. Purchased from Geoff Ohland at Partsource. Small blade # 107084...$25.50...large blade # 107083 $36.75...call 207 236 9791. Geoff has always been able to supply any part I needed except for shirt forks, which are unobtanium, as far as I know
Thanks for the info! So it seems they are available Sounds like these are a special fitment for the boxer then?
Okay I managed to take a proper look at the set up on the boxer today. The small wiper is definitely a special fitment and would not be easily available from a normal parts place. The good news is that the main (19") wiper is easily replaced with a standard common as muck bosch or similar wiper. We even fitted the spoiler equiped version!!!! (No more jittering at high speeds?? ) To fit a standard non-spoiler version is very simple. The unit is held in place with a small threaded faster with a 7mm nut to secure it. The threaded fastener goes through one of the holes (the smaller one) that are present as standard on the bosch spoilers. Piece of cake. To fit a spoiler equiped blade is slightly more involved but still easy. Part of the spoiler is blocking one side of the hole that the threaded fastener needs to go through. This is what we did: 1) Drill through (usually drill bit same size as hole in blade assembly) from the other side to make a hole in the plastic spoiler (about 4mm). 2) From the other side now (spoiler side) use a larger drill bit (around 7mm) to carefully enlarge the hole in the plastic spoiler. 3) Same again with about 9/10mm bit. Space is now clear for the fastener. I'll post a photo in next couple of days which should make things obvious.
...thinking about it the spoiler won't look right! Woke up this morning and realised it was the wrong thing to do. A 1979 Boxer just wouldn't look correct with it. The spoiler part unclips from the assembly though, then leaving a normal 19" wiper so that's what I'll do. I'll post a pic of the fitment anyway, without the spoiler on. (sorry for keep reviving this probably boring thread!)
I like the idea. I have a stock wiper on my 84 BBi. The previous owner had removed the entire assembly. Over 70 MPH it starts flopping around, (no spring tension I guess), any thoughts? I have no resistance to the idea of a spoiler blade if it solves the problem. It would be nice to get the car out of 3rd gear without wiper drama.
For anyone interested here are a couple of photos showing the wiper. First one shows the simple way that a standard bosch wiper can be attached really simply. Second one (Jay this may be of interest to you!) shows the spoiler that has been modified to enable fitment using the set screw/nut shown in the first photo. cheers and "happy new year" to everyone!
