Can I get some descriptions from fellow BBi fans how the clutch pedal action feels and any adjustment tips? I'm working away trying to complete my major eng-out service which included a brand new clutch, brg and brg sleeve. The pedal feel has a pronounced toggle / over-center feel from the helper spring in the pedal box. I spent a chunk of time studying the assy trying to figure out what adjustments are an option. I'm not ready to start it up, but I think I would hate the cluth operating like a switch. I've been fortunate enough to drive other F-car models, and 3 other BB's, and don't remember the clutch having such a specific, and prononced toggle feel. Thanks in advance for all recommendations. Mine doesnt feel like that at all. That helper spring under the dash wont be strong enough to be causing that sensation either, its there to fully return the pedal for the top free-play portion of the travel. If the free-play is minimal at the top then we can assume you have bled the air out properly. If the lever is indexed properly on the splined shaft then that leaves that aftermarket clutch as the culprit. Pretty cool looking clutch though! What make is it?
That looks like the AP clutch that came in the BB. There's no adjustment, so I would suggest bleeding the oil again. When I replaced mine I had to pump almost a pint through it before all the air was cleared out. My clutch has smooth even pressure throughout the entire travel. John
My major, including clutch, has about 600 miles on it now. The clutch is very progressive and smooth, almost light (compared to my Pantera anyway) and takeup is gradual. I don't like the 'switch' feel and know exactly what you're talking about. Though an odd car to pick, seems almost every TR6 I ever owned had that feel. Tough to drive.
I redid the clutch in my Boxer at the major a couple of years ago. It's the AP Racing clutch. I find it seems to be a bit stiffer than before, and the engagement is at the top of the travel-- right where the spring has the most force, making it hard to be smooth. I'm getting used to it, though.
Thanks all. It's the clutch provided by the dealer. It is the Ferrari part supercession for the clutch with the steel pp cover. Attached is the IFU explaining Ferrari switching to this design, and a couple of clutch pix. (Notice there are two versions of this clutch for the 512 BBi - I have the "standard" CPB5255-5ABRN as opposed to "Race Only" CPB5255-7ABRN) I believe it's well bled. I've run a lot of fluid thru with no bubbles present. There are 2 adjustments at the pedal box for: 1) pedal height position & 2) clutch master cyl rod length. Can I bother folks for a pix of the clutch lever on the bell housing showing its resting position? Is it slightly up with the rubber bellow fully compressed, or is it horizontal with with the bellow slightly extended. This is set up by the spline positioning. Thanks again. These are all I have in my folder. I could take a shot from below tonight if you like. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's good. Thanks. I can see that the boot is compressed, and the lever is slightly up. The hunt continues. I'm going to make an adjustment at the pedal next.
Its trying to go over center. With the first generation clutch it was very common because AP often missed in the calculation for shimming the assembly and provided shims that were too thick. Those were easy to correct by recalculating the shim thickness and changing accordingly. I have not experienced the same problem with one of the new style clutches as yours is but it could easily be caused by one or the other discs or the floater plate being thicker than normal. Not or having one here in front of me I do not know off the top of my head how it would be rectified. Pretty typical of AP actually. Their QA in nearly non existant.
