I have a 83 Boxer, anywho the tach is intermittent. Its on and off, doesn’t seem to be a loose wire from under the dash. Anyone had this problems with their boxers? It gets better when the car finally warms up

The tacho gets its signal direct from the CDI box on the engine baulkhead. I think it's a brown/black wire.

Is the CDI box making the correct "squeal" noises all the time.

Try disconnecting the CDI box and cleaning/wriggling the connectors. Turn the car off for this.

If there is definitely no other electrical glitches anywhere that could be related, then the tach could need a rebuild. There are shops that can do this but it is very rare to need it.

Check the fuse boxs for bad continuity too. Maybe even solder all the rivets up in it, front and back.

The Dinoplex ignition box is mounted on the engine firewall (out in the open) on the right (passenger) side above the right alternator. The wiring harness connector/plug is on the left side of the unit.

Pull the connector out and spray some electrical contact cleaner in the pin holes of the plug in connector. Push it back in the box and pull it in and out a couple of times to get the cleaner on the box connectors.

Pull it back out and let everything air dry good before you finally reconnect it and start the engine.

    Good luck!

    Gary

PS: I had some problems with my Dinoplex and ended up installing a aftermarket MSD 6-AL ignition box. Dinoplexes are not very reliable and are very expensive ($2K+) to replace. MSD is about $200.

This sounds good, I popped a coolant hose and it made a mess in the area you are speaking about. I'll try this tonight.

Note as Phil has written above, DO NOT unplug anything associated with the ignition system with the ignition switch on. Keep the key in your pocket! The spray electrical parts cleaner from the auto parts store works well, as does the TV contact cleaner from Radio Shack; that one has a small amount of antioxide that remains on the pins for some longer term protection.

I have the exact same problem with my 82' Boxer. I haven't looked into the problem yet as I was saving it for a winter project. What did you find loudvette ?

There is also a plug connection next to the coil on the left rear tire(looking forward) if you unplug that and clean it the problem could be solved, it worked for me.

I think he's missing a digit. If not I'll take one for my 512BB also!

    loudvette (Dave),

A lift isn't needed to get to the connection/box.

The Dinoplex is easily accessable from above and can even be removed (3-bolts) in a few minutes, if needed.

Here's a picture of it's location (mine's been replaced w/MSD unit in the same spot)

    Gary

PS: Great picture of your "two" Boxers!

Thanks for the picture description, mine is a little barried behind that air pump. Its a lot lower than your MSD. I'm going to try to get at it. Your Fire wall is very clean. Nice job I keep adding pictures, i like to see boxers and there isnt many places to view them. We need our own section in here.. Boxer talk...

Oh.... sorry, I didn't know about an air pump being there on yours.

My car has been returned back to Euro spec, so I don't have any of that emission equipment/stuff to deal with.

    loudvette,
Hey, you are local. And yes, we should get together for a drive. How long have you had your Boxer?
Here's a pic for you since your getting a lift. I've had mine since 98'. The best tool I ever purchased. My 308 GTS QV is on top, and the Boxer is below.

    Gary,
Since you have a tan interior, what color is the zippered tool bag that the tool kit is placed in and strapped to the right front fender well ? Was this bag color matched to the interior on 512BB's or are they black regardless of interior color?

Dave Drop me an email, and we have to do lunch somewhere. Only have a few more weeks before it snows! (Well the said we may get it Friday night) but you know as well as me that they can’t predict weather here.....

    Dave,

My tool kit pouch is tan (same as my interior) and my jack kit bag is black.

I believe that the tool kits are matched to the car's interior color, but the jack kits are black only.
