It looks like the price of filters has jumped dramatically in the last few months. Any tips on where to best to buy PN 148404? I want to buy a half dozen but not if it will cost me nearly or over $1000!
Looks like the current 512TR UFI filter number is 23 310 02 (updated from 23 310 01). I can't find a bulk seller anywhere though for the old < $40 a filter price.
I'd consider using the 218429 Purflux oil filter from a 599 (if you can accept the 7mm longer length) -- some information here (but use at you own risk): https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/evaluation-of-512tr-oil-filter-ufi-2331002-ferrari-part-number-148404.6482
If you do, please post a photo of how/if the slightly longer length of 218429 is acceptable and how much longer an oil filter could be than that and still be OK.
I would have been open to if I did not just wrap up an oil change with a $200 filter (which I only realized after it was all done and I picked up the car...hence this thread). If this remains unresolved by the time of my next filter change I will buy one of each and do a photoshoot
Here's the report on the 599 Purflux 218429 oil filter that shows how they (cleverly) put more filter element area into a smaller case: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/evaluation-of-purflux-oil-filter-ferrari-pn-218429-used-on-599-for-use-on-tr-512tr.645874/ It also has my opinions on why this filter is OK for TR or 512TR.
My UFI filter was the one Steve used for comparison. I then put the 599 on my TR. The extra length is a non-issue. Filter works great.
I may have wrongly thought that you had a 512TR instead of a TR if I asked you about it (I probably got confused because you sent me a 512TR oil filter -- which is also perfectly fine to use on a TR). The "extra length" of the 599 oil filter is only a potential issue on the 512TR chassis -- the 599 oil filter is shorter than the TR oil filter so no issue at all if used on a TR chassis. Still looking for feedback from a 512TR Owner who has used the 599 oil filter to comment if it is too exposed to risk being struck by something going under the car or OK (and the bonus response would be how much longer than a 599 oil filter could an oil filter be and still be reasonably safe on a 512TR chassis).
I agree with conclusions. What is the Baldwin 255? Baldwin did make a dedicated TR filter many years ago. Last I knew it was discontinued. Since Baldwin changed ownership some time ago and no longer owned by Ferrari owner I doubt we'll see anymore boutique filters from them.
I haven't cut open a Baldwin B255 yet, but I believe it is essentially the same as a Baldwin B253, but with a 1-12 mounting thread and no internal standpipe, no anti-drainback valve, and no bypass valve (and the stock TR oil filter doesn't have any of those items either): https://ph.baldwinfilters.com/baldwin/en/baldwin-spin-on-lube-filters/b255-baldwin I'd definitely consider using the B255 on a TR, but, while functionally OK for a 512TR for the lubrication, I believe it is just too long overall to be used on a 512TR (i.e., it will extend below the bottom plane of the 512TR chassis so too much risk that something passing under the car could hit the outer case and rupture it).
https://www.ferraripartsexchange.com/products/oil-filter-p015 Looks like Ferrparts/FPE has them for < $100 a pop! I bought two and will update the group on what shows up in the mail....
If 23.310.02 is the correct UFI number as shown on the MC site - https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/ferrari/148404?id=41768 it's available pretty much everywhere for peanuts. This was the discussion for the TR filter which was also referencing Steve's test https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/spg-oil-filter.665204/#post-148739127 https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/evaluation-of-purflux-oil-filter-ferrari-pn-218429-used-on-599-for-use-on-tr-512tr.645874/
My bad, search got mixed up with 23.110.02 instead of 23.310.02. However here are some super cheap alternatives - haven't checked all the specs. The prior version was UFI 23.310.00 which is still coming up on some sites. Some Euro sites are also offering these 2: KAMOKA F100301 KAMOKA F105101 These are the equivalents for those 2 Kamoka filters, 2 of which are UFI 2341800 and UFI 2345800 respectively: https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/KAMOKA/F100301 https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/KAMOKA/F105101
UFI 2341800 and UFI 2345800 (again, haven't checked the specs, but they cross reference to the 2 Kamoka they're specifically recommending) https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ufi/7241640 https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ufi/7241663
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/kamoka/7831824 According to that site both of those Kamoka's fit: FERRARI 208/308 Coupe (Year of Construction 09.1977 - 10.1989, 220 - 255 PS, Petrol) FERRARI 512 (TR) (Year of Construction 01.1992 - 10.1994, 428 PS, Petrol) FERRARI 512 (M) (Year of Construction 11.1994 - 08.1996, 438 PS, Petrol) FERRARI F40 Coupe (Year of Construction 02.1988 - 06.1992, 478 PS, Petrol) FERRARI Mondial Coupe (Year of Construction 07.1980 - 12.1993, 214 - 300 PS, Petrol) FERRARI Dino 246 GT (Year of Construction 02.1969 - 10.1973, 180 - 195 PS, Petrol) FERRARI Mondial Convertible (Year of Construction 03.1984 - 12.1988, 240 - 270 PS, Petrol)
Not possible. That list of cars takes a few different filters. 208/308/some Mondials, 246s and 512BBs take the same filter but not TR 512, 92 Mondial or F40. Another case of a confused filter company. There are several.
Between this page and https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/evaluation-of-purflux-oil-filter-ferrari-pn-218429-used-on-599-for-use-on-tr-512tr.645874/ there are hundreds of potential alternatives. Personally, I'd go with the Purflux discussed at the evaluation link since it was already on a TR someone bought, Steve checked it out and it's def. on the 599 and some others. There's also the SGP that's sold at Superformance etc. There are quite a few Euro sites (not just stores but also shops) offering various alternatives, so quite sure there are many that would work in normal use, but IMO for a few bucks it's not experimenting.
That list makes no sense. As Rifledriver points out, there is a difference in the filters between 80s/early 90s era Fcars I was on the hunt for the correct 512TR (not to be confused with regular Testarossa) filter and pleasantly surprised the prices are improving compared to over $200. I do agree reasonable to buy a batch of similar filter spec filters and see. Would be a fun project but I have enough projects already...
I looked it up because as I recalled the Testarossa filter was more than the 512TR one. Anyway, I'm not vouching for that info, but there are "strange" alternatives being used because you see multiple parts sites offering the same stuff mentioned above and there are also some shops showing purple filters etc. And that's with the inexpensive SGP being widely available. Why do you think there's no direct reference for 23.310.02 showing up?
Yeah, wrong thread for the 308's etc, but both of those Kamoka's come up on several other sites as the recommended oil filter for the 512TR (not the TR) and F40.
