512 TR alternator replacement

    I have an early engine (91) 512 TR and need to replace the alternator. I can get the later model alternator, but it looks like a significant mounting difference. Does anyone know where there are instructions for how to get this POS out? And how to get the new one in? My hopes for getting to VIR next week are fading fast....

    This was the first question I posted on the old Ferrarilist and the response was something like: You need special wrenches. Too funny. Anyway, on my 86 (uses the v-belt) the big problem is the large pivot bolt at the bottom of the alternator. It hits a water line and you can't pull it all the way out. So what worked for me is remove the panel(s) right behind the rear window. There was a mesh one and a painted one on my 86 via the 6mm bolts on the underside. Oh yeah, disconnect the battery. There is a cooling air line on the back of the alt. to remove and maybe a vent line to the oiltank. Then jack the car and remove the driver rear tire. My car also had a air-pump belt to remove besides the Alt. belt. Next loosen the driver side motor mounts (the big ones) and you can get a block of wood on the sealing flange of the oil pan and a scissors jack to lift just the driver side of the motor so the long bolt will clear the cooling line (they are rigidly mounted and there is no room to move them). There may be some washers spacing the alt forward between the alt. mounting tangs and engine bracket to watch for. I also used a moving blanket on the rear fender to lay on because the alt. is hard to get to. FWIW, after about the fourth time, I did it in less than an hour. YMMV.

    Thanks, though I am not sure how different the 512 is from the earlier TR as far as the alternator goes. Regardless, I think it would take me more than an hour :)

    I dont think that the later Tr has the same lower bolt problem that the earlier cars did.I find it easiest to remove the large motor mount bolts and then gently and carefully pry back the engine the scosh needed to remove bolt.I also did the next sob a favor and cut a little bit off of the bolt to eliminate this fiasco

    OK, I got it out. I removed the rear engine cover. I did not have to remove the intake plenum or loosen the motor mounts. The bolt was a bee-atch to get loose, and everything was a bit cramped, but I think I can get it back together pretty easily.

    This is the earlier Delco alternator. I am going to see if I can have it rebuilt. And reinstall it in less than 48 hours. Starting to sound like Monster Garage, only without the flames and sparks.

    OK, Auto Zone says it's NOT the alrenator (pulled it and had it tested). it is back in the car now with no changes: No charge. I have 12 V at both the line in and one of the two leads in the plug.

    I didn't need to shorten the bolt, on the 512 it is not a problem. Nor is the intake plenum. I pulled the rear engine cover and could get to everything.

    Any suggestions? I am stumped!!!!

    Cables (check connections and terminals on all the wiring connected to the alternator)

    Grounds (always a suspect) disconnect, polish up the surfaces and reconnect.

    Belts and pulleys (is everything turning like it should?).




    What was the original symptom?
