Ran a thread on the above in another segment, with limited success- I was suggested to try here.

my car-92-55 kil. When cold will take two to three cranks before starting- that is it will fire up every time but die. The third or frouth time it will stabilize itself and I will be good, runs very smoothly otherwise. Hot start, perfect, luke warm start perfect, barely warm start, perfect. Now, every so often, it will start and stabilize when cold, first time, but that is rather an exception. What should I look for?

Also, at this time, engine undergoing major service. Below is the list of what is being done:

replace valve cover gaskets, cam seals, cam gaskets, cam bolt oil seals and front crank seal
    replace complete water pump kit
replace all belts: a-c,alternator,air pump, timing along with bearing rollers
replace air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs and exhaust gaskets
replace both thermostats with gasket kits
    oil and filter service
    gear-transmission oil change
    coolant flush
break flush and servicing of calipers
    adjust valves as required

any suggestion as to what might be missing, or should be done?Anything in view of the above cold start issue that should be explored or fixed as the engine is out?

    thks

How about looking if the filler neck is not cracked or porous (fire hazard)?

In my experience, an SD-1 telss an enourmous amount of "the story" on these cars from cold start through failure/code throwing, to shut down...
It will hasten the sifting process...it was designed for just that process...Bosch 2.7 has many maps and circuits, and requires a disciplined, and quite clearly specified, diagnostics process of: "start here, if not this, then that, and so forth, and so on...."
FWIW...well worth the 1 hr hook up fee with a print out...

The SD1 actually provides very little info on the 2.7 system in the 512.

It was OBD1 and only provided the most basic info.

    Basics-

fuel system pressures, control pressures, fuel leakdown check. Also, try turning key on/off/on to prime the systems when cold, see if that changes anything. If the engine is out then you're sol until it's refitted.

FWIW, any Bosch tester will work on the electronics, system is 2 MEB 300E in effect.
