I just bought a 512 TR. When I try to turn on the fog lights, they come on for a few seconds and then kick back off, and the switch will not reset until the ignition is turned off. Relay? Can someone give me a trouble shooting plan?

Keep in mind that I no very little about electronics, so dumb it down if you can.

    Thanks

I had the same problem. It was the switch.

I pulled the switch and took it somewhat apart. I removed the black cover and the actual button revealing a circular/triangular/center pin contact under the spring beneath the button. It was corroded. I cleaned it with a little copper polish, reassembled, and viola! I have driving/fog lights again!

Took about 15 minutes, saved $280... In case anyone is in the same boat.

How do you take the switch out. Have any directions before I try to repair it like you did. Greg

    Greg,

It just pops out. Get a thin screwdriver and carefully pry the square unit out of the housing. It has a plug in the back. Then the black cover surrounding the round button will pop off the case, and most of it will come apart. Watch for the little triangular contact, it is loose and small, so you don't want it to get away! Hopefully this will help you as well.

    Regards,

    -J.

The reason you're having trouble with that switch is because it's a Mondial part. :)

Crap, it's cutting off again. Must be some little internal resistor or diode or something that is screwed up. Looks like I may need a new switch after all. :(

Is it repeatable? Is there some sort of thermal overload protector somewhere in the circuit? Do you hear any clicking when they come on/off? If you leave the switch on once they shut off, will the lights eventually come back on? If you turn the switch off them immediately turn them back on, do they come back on?

Try using some stabilant 22 in the switch on the contacts. Chances are there is still enough corrosion that when the current goes across the contacts, enough heat is generated to cause the connection to die. If it's the same switch as in a Mondial, then this may be the problem. Mine eventually melted into a useless blob of plastic.

OK, I pulled it and cleaned, and that did seem to help. Big drive tomorrow (Bermuda Run in NC! Whoohoo!) so we will see if that does the trick. It is the same part number as the Mondial switch.

Can you elaborate as to what melted with your switch? I am looking at used sources, but if it is just a matter of time, I will probably get a new switch and prolong my agony.

In my Mondial T the part is completely different. It is also only $40....

It melted simply because the current going through it combined with the corrosion led to enough resistance to create a lot of heat. I'm going to rewire the circuit to add in a relay that switches the current and takes the load off the switch.

I'd still try the stabilant before replacing the switch. A lot cheaper and it can be used to solve other electrical gremlins...
