Lately when I have been trying to start the car sometime's it take two or three try's to get it to start. All you hear is a clicking sound , and now the car will not start at all. I do know that the battery is fully charged. Anybody have this happen to them with their 512? And what was the fix.

    Thanks Dale

Take your battery out and make sure the battery terminals and connectors are clean, and the most important thing is that the battery is with full charge, do this before any other thing.

Yes I have removeded the battery and had it fully charged. and the bettery is only about 1 year old. It still will not start. could it possibly be a starter solonoid or the starter itself, is there any way to tell?

    Thanks Dale

Hi Dale, you have a click , click noise.. Do you have a trickle battery charger.? even though the head lights may still come on it does not gurantee is full charge. also check your alternator. check spark plug wires,
may cause vehicle not to start. check for moisture or carbon tracing in the distributor cap. check for lecky fuel injection or weak fuel pump may also cause problems.. lastly Dale call a local ferrari dealer.. have a tech do a thru system check... hope this helps..

    Hi Dale:

First, make sure the battery disconnect switch is not engaged. The positive battery cable runs inside the car to a junction box on the left front of the engine. It had a black plastic cover with a red + on the front and is a little smaller than a pack of cards. Make sure the connections are clean and tight (can only be accessed from under the car).

Then make sure you have 12 volts (or more) getting to your starter. Check with a voltmeter at the battery cable connection on the starter. If good, make a jumper wire, and, with the key in the run (not start) position, jump from the starter cable to the solenoid terminal.

If the starter turns over and the beast starts, your problem is in the 12v wire that goes from the starter switch to the solenoid. Clean all connections at the solenoid and inspect the wire for any frays, etc.

Before you go tearing apart the steering column, is your car equipped with an aftermarket alarm system? The yahoos that install such devises generally place their "kill circuit" in this starter solenoid wire by cutting it and then crimp connecting the ends to their unit. This was the point of failure on mine. Soldering those connections cured the problem. I hope this helps.

you are lucky its a TR & not a 512M, I discovered you have to remove the front wheel just to jump start the M, pretty dumb design

I had my mechanic run some electrodes up from the battery to resolve F's brainfart

TR alternators are notorious for going bad, maybe its the heat. I wrapped mine in a thermal blanket to try to keep some heat out

    Jimbo Hi,

Thanks for the tip on the starter solonoid. I checked the voltage and it was good (13v ) so I did as you said and jumped the solenoid and yes it did start right up as you thought, but I am not sure what other wire you are talking about, is it the little wire right on top of the starter that goes from the solenoid to the starter itself? A wire about two inches long

    Thanks Dale

Sorry, I've been away from the forum for a few days. I will check the TR today and get back to you.

In my case, the wire that runs from the ignition to the starter solenoid (comes out of the top wiring harness) was not delivering consistent voltage to the solenoid, hence sometimes no start. The problem was traced to a poor crimp connection in the crappy install job done in 1994 for the alarm system. It could have easily been a corroded connection. Check the voltage to the solenoid in that wire when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. If 12v, clean the connection or replace solenoid. If less than 12v, hunt for the source of the voltage drop.

    Thanks Jimbo.

I finnally found the problem, the voltage was fine, but there was not enough
amps. So I installed a Bosch start relay and yes it now starts perfect every
time. Just wanted to say thanks for all the good info.
