According to the book ! to check engine oil level you have to have the engine hot, then turn off and check within 15 secs. Trouble is the filler cap is too hot to handle ! how long can you leave it to check..........I thought dry sump engines had to be checked running ?? any ideas...

Use a towel or cloth. What I usually do is crack it loose then slightly tighten so when I go to unscrew she goes easily. Once checked tighten cap as usual.

This depends on the design -- i.e., if the oil returning to the tank when running sloshes the level a lot or sprays onto the dipstick, the level shown on the stick wouldn't be very reliable when running. By checking it quickly after shutoff, this minimizes the amount of oil that will escape out of the tank thru the oil pump(s) internal clearances and gives a good "average" position of where the level is during running. Do you have a metal cap on the stick? Stock ones tend to have a non-metallic (thermally non-conductive) outer cover for this very (hot) reason.

I have 3 dry sumps and it's all in preparation. Robbie is right about make sure you don't have any surprises and use a towel or some gloves (they are all hot).

    Dear Ferraristi,

Testarossa has a plastic covered dipstick cap. and gas cap

512TR has dipstick cap and gas cap in knurled aluminum with "Ferrari" imprinted on it.

I put the 512TR oil and gas caps on my 91 Testarossa

    512TR dip stick + cap....$400.00

    512TR gas cap ............$265.00

    engine bay looking cool.....priceless. :D
