I just did a 1300 mile trip with my 1992 TR and now I love it more than ever.( New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona ) I can only urge every Ferrari owner to take the Ferrari on a trip. Just do it! Don't save your car for the next guy! How did she hold up on the journey? Any overheating issues or anything like that? Looks like a wonderful time, thank you for posting the pictures.
Not a single hickup - she ran just perfect. 1300 mls of pure driving pleasure. I am planing already the next trip. Maybe Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to San Fransisco. Ottocars
Nice to see another TR on the road. If you would like more TRs with you PM me. Depending when you are planning on this trip our group PrancingThunder is always looking to drive. Most of our cars are treated as Queens after each ride. Come join our group, PCH run is what we like.
Thanks for sharing. I thought I recognized the Florida plate. You had to get her out of Florida to find some real nice open roads.
When I first bought my 93 back in 2000 I think I showed up at Shelton Ferrari in Ft L, FL to pick it up and the salesman asked me where my transporter was, I told him I was driving it to CT. He was amazed and said "I wish I had more clients like you" After that I did the Forza Mille in it. No problems on either trip. Great car
that's classic! It's interesting to see reactions by those that think the car is immediately going to a museum.
love my 512tr. i often consider it my favorite - especially for long hauls. i bought mine in rome in 2001, and similar story to william, i showed up at the dealer, and he asked where my garage was, and i said 'london...i am driving there now!" and i did !
These are all such great stories. Reading them made me say to my wife, "We need a road trip!" And THE car of choice will be the 512TR. Ferrari got it 'right' with this car in so many ways. Sheer driving joy is among one of its best charms. Thanks for the inspiration guys!
Jurgen - sounds like a great trip. The 512TR is a true grand touring automobile. Did you use the 512TR luggage? I did the Coast highway trip from San Fran to San Diego in 1979 in my sister's brand new Pontiac Firebird Formula with 400 miles on the odometer (I told her I wanted to drive it for the weekend - sorry, Sis). My buddy Ralph and I had just graduated Georgetown Med. We put a hitch on the Pontiac, loaded up our motorcycles and went from NY to DC to Chicago, through the Badlands, Buffalo State park, Vegas, Yosemite, over Donner Pass into CA, then San Fran to LA to San Diego, Tijuana, then back across Texas to Cleveland, Rochester and back to VA and NY. We had no specific itinerary and no time frame to be anywhere (and no cell phones or GPS). A true road trip. We had many adventures and met many interesting people on the way. It was a simpler, beautiful time...
Hi Jim: Yes! I used my tan luggage for the trip. Even my wife had plenty of space for all her clothes and shoes. She enjoyed the trip almost as much as I did. ( according to my garmin gps the highest recorded speed was 128 mls and she did not like it at all ) Cheers! Jurgen
I had a similar experience in my 512TR. Purchased the car in Boston last year and drove it home to Grand Junction, CO. 2200 miles IIRC, ran perfectly. The dealer said the same thing to me. Did the same with a 308 and 348 several years ago(not at the same time), Phoenix to Montana. I can't think of a better experience than having a new car and doing a road trip home in it.
you guys got me started...so i took the 512tr out for a little run. it still turns heads after nearly 20 years. amazing. the bringing-it-home roadtrip conversation got me thinking...i need to bring home the f40 soon, and i had not really been wanting to make the trip from london to geneva, but maybe i should. it will be uncomfortable and hot though, and i dont need to add another 1000km for nothing... maybe i should wait till fall to let the crowds dissipate a bit though. hmmmm
Just drive it Ross ! Take a weekend to do so.... boat of Harwich to Scheveningen.... I would kindly offer you a bed/stay in Holland (Amersfoort) but that is not even halfway .... Gr from Mel in NL.
Good for you!!! When I bought my luggage, my wife said WOW I can fit alot of stuff in those, but I havent had the gutts to us them what they were intended for
There is only one reason I actually use my 512TR luggage. I have 2 sets. I use the natural colored set for travel and the more rare black set for show. The natural set was sold to me by a pawn shop in Las Vegas (ebay) and the black set I found on Craigslist in SoCal. Both sets had never been used, came with dust covers and the original card board inside. Now I am looking for a set for my 575M. J. Otto
Hello all! I just picked up my 92' 512TR today! It's a red/tan beauty and it's in perfect shape. I had heard all the stories about the 512's driving like tanks and being clumsy, sloppy, hard to drive, old feeling etc... Well, after driving mine for the first time I have to conclude that the people that have said that about the 512's have NEVER actually driven one! I came from owning a 355 GTB that was well sorted, and I can safely say that as much as I liked the 355 I would never go back to one now that I have driven a 512TR. I never thought I'd say that about my 355GTB, but the TR has made me forget the 355. I LOVE the fact the TR does not have power steering. The feel of the road in your hands is what driving a Ferrari is all about, the TR delivers in spades. The car is absolutely GLUED to the road and the boxer engine makes beautiful music throught the Capristo exhaust. I find NO issue with visibility or size and weight of the car at all, it's simply glorious. If you enjoy DRIVING, instead of simply being along for the ride while the car does everything electronically to keep you on the road.....then you owe it to yourself to try one of these unique and stunning cars! With so few 512TR's made I wonder if the people bashing the 512's have really even been in one. Just goes to show that you can't believe everyhting you read, except my comments of course lol!! Honestly the 512TR is awesome, plus right now they're a bargain. Love love love it!!!!!
Let me know when you are going. I have been known to take my bull out for LONG drives and would love to drive down 6.5 hours and meet you in San Diego for a PCH drive back up to NorCal. I'm due for another one of those soon. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309657&highlight=1000+diablo
I drove one from London to Nice and back for a long weekend. Cannot forget a race to get the first ferry from Calais at 6 am - driving through the night in convoy with an AM DBS and a 246. The 512 was by far and away the best tourer cruised easily at 160 to 180 and better from time to time. It was in the +30s outside and the a/c was amazingly good. I was so impressed that i now own one and its charms continue. Fortunately plenty were built so a parts hunt is not yet at the level it is for some other models.
Tommorow I leave for a fun trip. Thank you in advance for indulging me in this family/car story. For father's day, my son gave me tickets to see John Butler Trio in Atlanta, a 3 hour drive. After several plan revisions, finally decided to take my trusty truck, me and him, do the concert, the next day hit a small 'cars and coffee gathering'. Things change. Turns out I was able to secure the Boxer rear clamshell I'd been huntiing. Would make THE most incredible garage art ever. After discussing 'how to ship' the seller, 'suicidedoors64' said, "I'm in Atlanta". Hmmm. Since I had some pesky 'CELs' on my 512TR, figured I'd send the car to FoA, who gave me a 10% 'hope' it might be ready for the return ride. You guys know how this goes. Several moving parts, various schedules, pickups, dropoffs, rarely works out. When I contacted the clamshell seller I asked how far he was from FoA. "Well, my engine is there now, so no problem to get the clamshell there waiting on you." Wow. Got a call from FoA this morning, "Your car will be ready by the time you get here, standing tall". So, me and my son together for the drive over. A great concert with him that night. Cars and Coffee the next morning. To FoA for the clamshelll AND 512TR pick up, then home. What a grand weekend. I look forward to all of it. The last 3 hours in the 12 cylinder Fcar, a great exclamation point. Just thought I'd share.
