I've finally decided to make a high school dream come true and purchase a Boxer. I've still got the Road&Track, albeit a bit tattered, that started the whole thing. I just spent the last couple hours reading all the past threads on 365s and 512s and feel much more confident in my ability to find the "right" car, actually I'm quite pumped to get a car after this Ferrari Boxer overload!
Thanks gentlemen for sharing your great wealth of info (and pics) on this site.

I started my search today with a car here in my backyard.
    #45339 a 1983 512BBi red on black.
    http://www.truspeedmotorcars.com/inventory_detail.aspx?@page_stock_no=405
This car appears to be in descent shape, not abused but not babied.
Paint looks good from ten feet, up close you can see some small paint chip touchups and the paint is starting to wear down to the primer (a yellow color) on the sharp edges.
Interior is in nice shape, passenger seat shows the miles but the rest looks clean and straight. Still has original radio and equalizer.
Engine compartment looks straight, could use a good cleaning and some items could use some paint touch up.
Weatherstripping still looks good overall, trunk and bonnet seals have some rips.
Front trunk material still appears good, again it needs to be detailed It has the spare and tool kit.
Did notice a small leak from the rear of the transaxle.
I was told they were waiting on the records from the owner.

I'm not sure this is the car I'm looking for.
If the records look good it would make a good driver.
I think I'm looking for a car that would show better, not a 100 point car, but one that would not need any excuses when showing it to other Ferrari drivers.

I've got a couple questions on this car that maybe you could help me answer.
In my research, I came across some references to this car having the white front lenses being significant. Is there any possibility that these are original on this car?
This car has a single owners manual in a "new" style leather folder that even has the Ferrari maglite. Were there more "books" to the 512 and does anyone have any pics of the original books and folder for a 512?
And last, has anyone else seen this car or have any knowledge of its history?

    Thanks
    Kevin
I hope to be posting an "I found it!" thread soon.

Murph, congratulations on finally making the dream come true... When you finally decide, we all hope to see pictures and read your impressions of the car...

This car has changed hands quite a bit...

In 1990, it was for sale with 60,000 KM - i don't know what that figures out to, in miles...

Later in 1990, it was for sale with 38,000 miles...

In 1993, it was for sale with EPA/DOT releases and tools, but no books...

    Offered again in 1993...

    Again in 1994...

In 1995, it was for sale with 38,000 miles on it...

In 1999, it was for sale with 28,500 miles on it...

In 2000, it was for sale at two different times with the same mileage; 28,500...

Later in 2000 it was for sale again, with 28,000 miles...

    In 2001, it was auctioned...

In 2002, it was for sale with 47,300 miles...

In 2003 it was for sale at two different times with 29,000 miles...

Good luck and keep us posted on your search...

This particular Boxer has been for sale awhile and keeps popping up, it has been at a few different dealers and on Ebay also, seeing its history you can see why along with odometer issues, it seems to like 30k miles for some reason as do all other Ferraris.

Sounds like its gonna need a bit of work to make real nice, not a big deal if priced right, I would get someone qualified to check the cars health of the engine and go from their on making an offer if you really want this one.

Budget at least $10k for paint
Transaxle leak may or may not be a big deal, it will be if you need to pull the motor
White lenses are just Euro lenses and nothing of significance as all Boxers are Euros and converted to US specs for import here

Check out http://www.hemmings.com their are a few for sale or ferraribuy.com, ferraris-online.com also for more Boxers

The Sheehan Boxer was at $79k, the owner wants to sell it to drop the price so much.

It needs to have a pair of California mirrors put on which will look much nicer compared to that ugly Vitaloni flag mirror, looks like it may need some minor detailing in the engine bay and to make it fancy add some 3 eared knock offs.

Looks like a great deal to me for someone.

Part of the Ron Tonkin collection since 1990 proabably on display, sold to new owner in 2000 who has never redlined it, the car probably hasn't been redlined in 14 years and is deparately waiting for someone to blow the carbon out of its pistons, poor thing!

I sent a long list of questions to Mr. Sheehan last night. It sure looks interesting.

Great, let us know if anyone checks it out in person or buys it.

Hopefully someone from here gets it if it checks out vs having it shipped off to Europe as Boxers are at a $ premium there.

And once they leave...they can't return to the US....thanks DOT!

If the Sheehan car sounds good, I may hop up to take a look. I'm not really sure that a BB is a car I want in Phoenix...they will roast you while you drive.

I am in Vegas, all of the mid engine cars get hot inside because of the windshield rake greenhouse effect and the engine right behind you, my 328 is the same, the a/c robs power and the pavement is so hot you get radiant heat from it which is hard on the alumiunm engine anyway so you really can't drive them hard in the hot summer days so why bother, I just drive my cars at night.

Yup, I had a 1989 328GTS. It was fantastic for many years driving in Northern California. Here in Phoenix, my 328 driving season shrunk down to November - March! I'd just like to have a F-car with a little more vintage feel than my 550, and I have always liked the BB.

    Kevin,
Best of luck ! I need some more Boxer owners here in Southern California to go on Boxer drives. The one you are looking at sounds good. Get the best price!

I spoke with the owner today, and traded e-mails with Mike Sheehan. I suspect this car will be gone before I could reach Portland for a test drive. It's not perfect, but I think it could be a great car that someone would get every penny (probably more) out of in a few years.

That's classic GTO money (Pontiac). Can see why you're on it. Lot of car for the $. Seems well cared for w/good history. If I were angling for a Boxer (one day, hopefully), I'd be shopping this one, too.
