I finally drove myBBi for the first time since I bought it years ago, I posted this on the major+ thread but since that is an old thread I decided to make a new post. After all the work I did this last year I was a bit nervous but things went better than I expected.

    About the drive:
I had read about how these cars drive, even so I was surprised by how hard it is to drive slow around town, the heavy steering and the on/off clutch are demanding. But on the open road you are rewarded with jet-like performance. Also, I now understand why so many change the exhaust, with the stock mufflers you can barely hear the exhaust note.

I ask for feedback on the following:

-What is the normal coolant temperature on the bbi? When on the road my gauge moves between close to 110C (fans start) and 90C, but once I get into slow driving and traffic temps go up close to 120C. This seems a bit high, but there is no tank overflow or overheating symptoms.

-When in neutral I can hear some gear clatter from the transmission, Is some noise level normal? I did inspect the drop gears and bearings and these seemed ok and I also replaced the ring nuts on these because they were damaged by someone before. I admit there is a 50/50 chance I installed the middle gear reversed as I didn’t note the orientation upon disassembly, I also didn’t check the transmission bearings, only the gears.

-The electric mirrors are not working correctly, any tips on how to disassemble without breaking parts?

There are still a few things to fix before I can fully enjoy the car (fuel level gauge, engine stalling sometimes when stopping). And later I will get to changing all the suspension bushings but first I want to get other projects on the road.

Parts I’m still hunting down: left hand bonnet grille, horn button (big ring type).

I don’t want to sound like a won an oscar but I do feel I have to give special credit to fchat and all of you guys who are an invaluable source of support and motivation.

The picture of the book I’ve attached because this one was a gift from my parents when I was 11 years old, my favorite cars there where the 288GTO and the 512BB, and although I admit I was later impressed by the testarossa for years, as I got older I appreciated the 512BBi more and more, I just never thought I would be able to own one.

Well done job! It must be satisfying to have here back on the road after all that work. I have a couple of comments to your questions above and other questions you had in your "major" thread:

    - You mentioned that your steering wheel needed adjustment. Before re-positioning the steering wheel ensure that it is not the ball joints on the steering rack that needs adjustment. The steering wheel cannot be adjusted much before before the turning light mechanism goes out of alignment.

    - Your cooling water temperature seems too high and could indicate an issue. Mine vary between 90 and max 100 dec C depending outside temperature and car speed. A few things to check: Is your radiator overhauled with new core? if not; is it cleaned out from decades of old debris? Is the electrical fan thermostat functioning correctly? Is the water thermostat functioning correctly? Is the cooling system properly bled from air? Is the water pump in good working condition and lastly did you leave any cloth or similar blockage in the lines that you forgot to remove when re-assembling the car (Believe me this can happen....don't ask how I know..-:)

Engine stalling upon stops; Most likely you need to adjust the two banks against each others (Idle screw vs bypass screw + air/fuel screw if you have tampered with that). The BBi engine needs the bypass screws to be a bit more opened than the Testarossa otherwise the engine will stumble when you drop the accelerator). You need your vacuum gauge to set up the balance between the banks and you will need a 4 gas analyser to adjust the fuel / air ratio. Use the search function on fchat for inspiration.

The side mirrors can be taken apart without damaging them. Lots of good threads covering that here on fchat. But that said, nine out of ten times the issue is externally related to either your wiring harness, wire connector or the switch. I would recommend that you do some fault finding on these components first before you start the process of dismantling the mirrors. Note that the mirrors are NLA and the same goes for the gears inside them. If you damage anything then you have a problem. Best thing is to test them before tearing them down by applying 12V test voltage. You will need to dive into the electrical diagram in your user manual to see how the mirrors are connected up.

    Good wrenching

    Best, Peter

yes, a little high. I would do what peter says:
but also check the real water temperature with an infrared thermometer
at the thermostat and also at the radiator top and buttom when the fans running

Ok, I rechecked the coolant temps and have to correct my previous post, on the road the temps move between 90 and a bit below 100 which is when the fans start, on traffic or slow driving I get close to 110C (NOT 120C as I stated before).

Thank you for the feedback, I will get into checking all your reccomendations.

before I let the radiator done with a new net I also had high temperature always going slowly uphill, also in the city. I hear the fans working. on the BB 3 fans in front of the radiator. after the new net it was not much better. so I removed the 3 fans in front of the radiator and installed 2 fans at the back of the radiator and since then no problem anymore. max. 105 °C :)

As I grew older I also came to prefer the BB over the TR, but never thought I could own one. Indeed, I can’t, so I “settle” for the TR.

I had a similar story related to the first time that I had the opportunity to drive my Boxer, basically 6 years after I purchased it. Concerning the temps, the fans should kick on prior to 100C. I had this same issue, after verifying the temps with an infrared gun, I needed to replaced the fan switch. The fans weren’t running until 100 and then would run sporadically on and off. Now the fans kick on around 90C and the engine temps consistently run between 90 and 100, depending upon the outside temp.

I have a TR in the same color combo as your BB. It looks awesome, enjoy it.

A 82 BBi was my first Ferrari. I completely overhauled the ac system which as you know works marginally in hot weather. If the car continues to run hot, replace the fan operating sensor with a low temp one.Great car car..enjoy.

Yes with stock, wheels and tires theyre heavy at slow speeds, but lighten up beautifully as you head north.
They are not comfortable lower speed crusier which is probably why so many "investors" dont buy them.
On the right day and right road theyre simply magic,
Exhaust, if youre headers are ok a Bell single can exhuast imo sounds best, loud enough to be heard but not too loud.
The more you drive it the more youll get used to it, its actualy quite an intuitive car and speaks to the driver well.

I have the same exhaust on my BB koenig. problem once has been inside of on emuffler there was a metal sheet broken and this made terrible noises. so I opened the muffler, cut this metal out and welded the cut again. same I did with the other muffler. now it sounds much more great than before and still not too loud

I haven’t yet determined which sound I like the best, engine or exhaust. Both sound amazing. I especially like the exhaust sound bouncing off of other cars as you pass them in the opposite direction. It amplifies the sound as you pass.
