I have recently purchased a 84' Boxer and am having trouble getting the radio volume to play loud enough to hear when my car is running. I am hoping it is something I am not aware of with the radio or equalizer. Would someone make a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Well, why are you even listening to the radio? The best reception you have is coming from the twelve stations behind your headrest.

    The best solution is to put the factory radio in safe dry storage, and put in a more modern radio. Do not even bother to hook up the equalizer. Just to not lose the factory radio unless you will sell it to me. :}

I thought the radios in BB's were just stage props?

    First of all welcome!

You maybe should post above in Technical, as these fellow Boxer owners are being jokers!

You also might find Fchatter enjoythemusic, who runs a 328 but is a sound system specialist, he can help...sounds as if the amp may not be working....a fuse perhaps?

C'mon guys, when I get my Boxer it'd better BLAST out Sammy Hagar, doing "I can't Drive 55!! Maybe some others will post after this thread stays around.

Also the Title could be changed to "Boxer stereo system question" or something more precise to "draw the audience in"....you do have one purchase offer on the troublesome equipment, though.....

Glad to give you guy some food for jokes! Does it show that I am new to FerrariChat?

FYI I need the radio to work when I enter it in for competing in for Coppa Macchina Awards. I did so with my 89' 328 GTS and want to continue with this car.

Thanks for the serious and not so serious responces.

The site's software tracks your post count....you are up to "4", and mine is higher than giraffe p**sy!

This will be the Boxer Radio Joking Thread from now on.......the original equipment is incredibly rare in the marketplace, if you were unaware of that.

Welcome to the site though, seriously and we have a TRAINLOAD of Boxer owners on here. There is a thread listing them, but I know of some "sleepers"....

The equalizer is probably not on...you have to turn it on seperately from the radio...also check the fuses...with the equalizer on it should be plenty loud...and. it sounds just fine for cassett tape quality anyway..

I thought the 328 did not come with a factory radio installed?

If it helps at all, the mondial came with the same radio as the BBi (and maybe the BB too). Maybe you all knew that and all my digging was for nothing, just thought I would share. BUT, you think I can find a friggen mondial pioneer radio either? Not yet but then again im not bending over backwards to find one either, mine is there and I smile everytime I see it :)

Are you bringing the Boxer to Cavallino?

Anyway, my initial response was not really intended to be a joke. I found my car in Orange County. When the owner asked me if I wanted to drive, I said no, just give me a ride up the coast highway.

When I got in, I asked him if the radio worked. He gave me a perplexed look, and said he didn't know. While reaching over to turn it on, he asked me, why? Just as the radio came on, within that millisecond, I knew why he asked me why. It is extemporaneous noise that cover up the real music.

Sure the radio worked, but only once since have I turned it on again, and that is when the transport brought it to Florida. Ever since then, all I listen to when I drive the Boxer is the sound of the motor. Better than Bocelli or White Snake.

I used mine while on the long drive from Chicago to Washington DC and back to attend FCA Nationals in the BBI. I used the radio w/equalizer, cassette and a plug-in CD player with a cassette adaptor. I could hear both Van Halen and Sammy Hagar very well.

If your equalizer is on, make sure the F-R fader is balanced or at least pointing to the front speakers. If so, a poor ground may be the cause of poor volume.

If the light on the equalizer does not light, check the in-line fuse located on the back of the unit.

The BBI's factory sound system was premium for it's day, but it is dated. Factory systems today have far greater power and superior speakers.

The silverface Pioneer doesn't jive with the black dash, and mine is having issues now. My dream date would be to replace it with a non-flashy blackface unit with an interface to the iPod. But: You'd want it easily swappable for concours activity.

BTW, where the h*ll is the antenna?!?

Antenna is in the winshield. Very thin wire inbedded in windshield, same as 70's vintage US cars. Come on Buzz, you and I are almost old enough to remember that!!!

This is a BOXER radio thread, no mondials or wimpy 328s!!! LOL!

Hope all this helps.....I thought the equalizer was seperately powered and fused...makes sense.

You could yank it all out, and get a trick CD with flip screen nav system.....minus one point in FCA judging....maybe.

I won't run on Michelins anyway, I'm sponsored by Goodyear!

That is correct...radios were dealer installed in all Ferraris up to the 348 I believe with the exception of the BB512i that came with a Pioneer radio/equalizer system...

Not sure if thats correct, the mondial QV has the same radio as the BBi of the same year. Seen many of them so probably factory installed like the bb's.

Thanks to MarkPDX we have a radio thread! LOL!

Anyone have a schematic on the interconnect wiring between the headend and the equalizer amp section? It would show fusing and voltage input info...

So can anyone tell me what the potential point reduction there would be at a Cavallino level concourse for having either the wrong head unit or no head unit at all?

Ah. Of course. Who can forget the sterling reception? They went back to a regular antenna with a regular up/down switch by the time my '89 Mondi came out. Although maybe that's because they didn't care about poking a hole in the Mondi.

Now if only the tuning knob worked.... ;-)

According to FCA judging guidelines, radios fall into the instrument condition/radio category as used by the "Interior" Judge.
The deductions are "suggested deductions", i.e not a hard and fast rule. I believe that these deductions apply more to instruments than to radios:
    Scratches/wear .5 point deduction
    Inoperative- 1 point deduction
    Add-0n- 2 " "
    Incorrect- 3 " "

    Best Regards,

    Dave Olimpi
