Cant remember if its the same set up as the earlier Testarossa. On these cars the damn lower bolt holding the alternator to the bracket is too long and hits the firewall way before its close to coming out.You have to remove both bolts from the center of the motor mounts and persuade the motor back with a large crowbar.I always cut some of the bolt off so that the next poor bastard to come along didnt have to do the same stroke and jerk(Ferrari common courtesy)Not quite what you asked but I had to say something.(I really cursed the guy/guy's responsible for this outrage the first time I had to deal with it.seemed way too much like something the Brits would have perpetrated.
Dear Ferraristi, If a 512 alt belt is similar to a Testarossa, here's the deal. On the alt. there are two bolts holding it in place. One is on the aluminum cradle and the other bolt holding the tension slider to the alt. loosen the bolt on the cradle and the bolt holding the slider. Wind out the tension bolt until the alt. comes down to take the belt off. You do not have to remove the cradle bolt...just loosen it. If it will not break loose, jack up the car and loosen from underneath. Place a socket wrench with a small lenght of pipe to get some leverage. If it's tight, you won't have the leverage from above. ( just jack up the car....you well spend lots of time fighting untill you give up....ask me how I know. FIRST, you will have to do the above for the AC compressor as its belt is in front. To make things easy, unbolt the trim pannel from behind the rear window, place a towel on the engine and lay on your stomach. Pull yourself foward to where your neck is just hitting the engine deck lid ( no kidding ) SWEAR A FEW TIMES ! (this is a must...for all Ferrari models ) I have done this a few times....not so bad. If you want an alt removal....well that's another story...let me know, I'll post the proceedure. Shamile Freeze...Miami Vice !
If you just jack up the motor a hair the bolt will miss the water pipe and come right out. Don't even need to loosen the mount bolt. No modifications required. The guys who built it aren't so dumb, we just have to figure out how it is done.
