I'm trying to install a Hill Engineering Slick Shift to my 512TR, and it seems I need to remove the forward switch panel in order to remove and install the gate.

However the right hand side top (where the AC buttons are) doesn't simply lift out, and I don't want to force it, so can anyone tell me if there are any screws/clips etc I need to remove to loosen the panel?

Start from back to front with removal on the front console. There is a Allen bolt in the center holding the rear box down, then same with the middle piece. Now you should see 2 screws holding the front console in place. Take the ashtray out .Thats all for screws. There nothin else holding the console in place. Be very careful when pulling this up. They crack very easily especially on the sides of the ashtray. It does take a bit of jiggling and don,t forget you have alot of wiring holding it down.

I too have the same challenge. It's the 2 screws that elude me. Close to or below which control should I be looking?

I got it done today - really very easy - the two screws are at the rear of the front panel (close to the hazard warning switch), but you must remove the rear section to access them - once you have them out the whole front section simply lifts out from back to front.

I think all European cars came like that? I'd like to get rid of it however - is there a replacement available?

Thanks for that. I found those screws. They are horizontally set up to grip the plastic tongues of the front plastic console trim. However my front trim remains firmly attached at the front, adjacent to the shift gate. The driver side of that piece seems not to be fixed to anything and sits loosely ontop of the shift gate. But the passenger side is tightly held against the leather edge of the console as if it has another retaining screw. Does it? I have not seen anything that indicates there is anything retaining this front piece of plastic to the console.

    Any suggestions?

If I remember correctly the panel is clipped in at the front and had to be lifted from the rear then slid backwards to release. There definitely was no other permanent fittings (i.e. screws) involved. I suppose it could be glued/stuck down somehow, so maybe get a thin piece of metal under the plastic and see if you can ease it off.

Whatever you do be careful, I believe this plastic can be brittle.

Thanks. I have already cracked the fram that surrounds the shift gate !#$%# So some super glue welding has to be done. I suspect mine got installed with the entire console out of the car and thus has something extra nailing down that front passenger side corner. Your insight has been so helpful - sure appreciate it as its impossible to see anything and the W/S manual and IPC are silent on the install except to show it as a single sheet.

Thanks for posting those. For me at least, it's the piece in front that I would like to see removed. Something holds them in very definitely in their north east corner.

    Hi All
Bringing this thread back to life as I sit here with sticky goo all over my hands... How does the the cubby section between the seats come out? The piece that once removed reveals the two screws that need removing.

    Thanks very much

An ashtray? That's interesting, and one has a lid with the crossed flags dating back to the 1950s.

Red Bay Cars have such stuff from time to time, not sure if they have it available at the moment, but worth checking.
