Hi Guys, would anyone be kind enough to maybe shed some expert light on the problem i am having with my newly purchased 512TR. Obviously it is largely made of aluminimum panels and they seen to have pretty much all corroded and blistered under the paint work in various places along the body. this is clearly some sort of reaction and it will require a complete respray to rectify (which was factored into the selling price) but obviously the cause has to be identified before any repaint can take place. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Ferrari has always been casual about connecting dissimilar metals. I'd wager you are looking at electrolysis, aggravated by your damp climate. Napolis here actually drove an early TR until they cautioned him the frame had badly deteriorated (in coastal New York climate) and the car was decomissioned. Maybe a restoration shop can come up with some solutions that after the reapir the metal panels are isolated? We have a special tape wrap used in my industry to solve this issue.
Was told years ago by a Ferrari expert to always disconnect the earth lead from battery when the car was stored , it helps to avoid corrosion........not sure why, but have done so for 12 years with my 512 tr , and no rust problems in rainy England !
I have seen dozens of TR's an F512's (M) and a lot have the same problem you discribe ... Bad quality control of the F factory I presume ...
