I recently acquired a 1992 512TR, my dashboard is black but it is no solid dark black like my 328GTS. It is very light black so is this the colour for it or it is fading? The interior condition is immaculate except for this part.

It may be faded but I had a different problem. I overtreated the dash with leather restorer and it caused the old leather treatments to leach out and gave the leather a white caste. I resolved the problem with a good leather cleaner and a lot of rubbing. A very wet scotch brite pad with very little pressure did the trick.

Also be very careful what material you use to clean the plastic door handles and instrument binacle. Some (like armorall) react with the plastic and the sun to soften the surface permanently leaving them a sticky and easily marked surface. I believe this cannot be repaired and the items would need to be replaced if you did not like that gooey touch.

Well guys just took it to a car wash & polish today and told them the problem so they tried, what they called, 'leather conditioner' and later applied a leather cream on it. Guess what solid black and very shineny. Looks gorgeous.

This is exactly what happened to me as discussed in my earlier message. It was a great feeling to know you were not looking to replace a dash.

I never had any intention of replacing the original one as I was finding a way to revive the leather. However, even before the breakthrough the dashboard wasn't that bad really just sort of whitish fading.

I will observe how it will develop from now on.
