Found an interesting site in U.K. about ...> F512TR engine removal....... HERE .... Very interesting pictures and interesting repairs + nice detailing of this RH 512TR ! (But VERY stupid in lifting the engine itsself IMHO....) Have a look ! Image Unavailable, Please Login
+1 Mel. He reckons that he knows what he is doing, but anyone with just a ounce of mechanical expertise would know that this is no the way to lift an (very heavy) engine. This man has no mechanical empathy and I doubt any real mechanical or metallurgical qualification other than 'grunt'. Ho Hum, I hope the owner is happy. P
Yikes! Those plenums won't be cheap! Does the 512TR come out the top?? I thought they ALL dropped out the bottom.
Reminds me of someone CALLING in to JRV: "How to you remove the engine from a Lamborghini...??" *cheerfully, dragging a smoke from a Carlton* "Well Sir, truthfully, we use a chain...."
Yeah I thought the same things as you guys.....YIKES !!!!!!!!!!! That reminds me of a story....though not about Ferraris. I was visiting my Mom one day some years ago, on a hot summer day. She lived across the street from some real rednecks, who were always doing something with cars, truck, mowers, etc. Nothing they had was nice, everything was rusty, filthy and grubby. One day in "they" were in their pickup truck, hauling a big block Ford engine in the back. As they came round the corner....that motor rolled out the back and onto the road. Mom and I both felt the impact and subsequent tumble that 460 took down the road. We went to the door and looked out, there "they" were...in all their "deliverance glory"....studying the situation. They had to get that motor back into the bed of the truck. The three of them tried lifting it....grimmacing so hard I saw they they had only about 7 teeth between them. Finally the one with the Nascar hat (the brains of the outfit) had an idea. Here's where it gets ingenious. He takes a long chain out of the back of the truck, and hooks it to the motor. He then runs the chain up over the cab of the truck (going from back to the front)....down over the hood...and finally down on to the road, just in front of one of the tires. He then gets in the truck, starts her up...and slowly drives forward. The chain is now going under the front tire as he moves forward....and low and behold...the motor starts being pulled up into the truck. As the motor is lifted off the ground, the cab of the truck gets a really bad crease....and the sound of the chain with 800 pounds of load dragging across the cab roof is terrible....but inch by inch he keeps going and soon the motor is right back where it belongs....in the bed of the truck. It was one of the most entertaining things I've ever seen. BIG TEX...you mentioned JRV, God rest his soul. He was a bit cantankerous at times but he really helped me out on numerous occasions. (reminds me of someone here on fchat)
Great story Jeff...There always seems to be some of 'those' types around. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So how is it supposed to be done?? Where would you normally attach something to the 512 engine to pull it out???
Howdy Chris. Things rolling right along. Be cool if I were about 10 years younger but that aint gunna happen. How about you out on the other coast? Shamile...those boys need some front end work.
Still trying to make a honest buck the old fasion way. And also trying to get my full size 308 slot car back on the road. Stay well.
THAT is freakin hilarious. The man was a genious. I'm sure there was a nice valley in the roof of the cab after that. Probably the hood grill and bumper too. Did they happen to stop in the middle of the project, open the hood, and grab a couple air cleaner burritos? I wish I could have seen that big block tumble. I'm sure Ida probably wet myself or shoot milk out my nose!
Tie downs or ropes but they need to go around something much stronger than the intake manifolds. It also helps a bunch on a 512 if the rear of the power unit is up at about 30 degrees.

Now thats the way to do it. I think I followed the whole of that last engine out thread some time ago. LOTS of really useful information and great photos as well... P
Scary the way he handles that engine MANY times hanging from the plenums. On another note, I actually need a hand from you blokes. I need to create a set of written instructions, step by step, that I can send over to Japan to assist some guys to remove the engine and drivetrain from a 512M so that it can be exported to Australia. The car can't enter Australia in one piece so engine, trans and running gear must be removed and shipped seperately and then the rest of the body can ship. Some crap Australian customs rules defining what is a car and what is parts. Too tricky to go into here, bt trust me, if there was an alternative, I'd be all over it. Having recently removed the Testa engine, I'm wondering what are the big differences that you would find on a Euro spec 512M in removing the engine out through the top. I'll start the ball rolling, numbered 1 - 100 and if you guys remember a step or need to slip in a reminder, just tell me that it goes between step 12 and 13 or whatever and I'll try to create a list. These guys are mechanics but don't know Ferrari's at all and I can't risk damage caused by stupidity, rushing or simply not being informed. 1. Remove the air boxes and air intake systems. 2. Remove the road wheels. 3. Remove the engine deck lid. 4. Remove the mesh grill behind the back window. 4.1 Remove all four wheel arch liners. 5. Shift into third gear and undo the shifter linkage then shift to second to give selector shaft clearance. 6. Disconnect the large 'Anderson' plug. Is this the same on a 512TR or is there an electrical point elsewhere to remove? 7. Drain engine oil. 8. Drain oil reservoir. 9. Disconnect large oil pipes. 36mm, 41mm and 46mm open end spanners required. 10. Disconnect air conditioner pipes at compressor. 11. Remove muffler and any test pipes or cats leaving the short headers only attached to engine. 12. Disconnect electrical lines from clutch housing. 12.1 Drain the two radiators. 12.2 Remove the radiator expansion tank. 12.3 Disconnect the two drive shafts at the gearbox end. 12.4 Disconnect the top radiator hose from the Y shaped pipes at rear top of engine. 13. On a Testarossa there are plugs under the radiator expansion tank. What is on a TR/M? 14. Testarossa has vacuum lines from intake plenums. What is on 512 TR/M and where? 15. Testarossa has hard return lines to the tanks. Where are these on a 512TR/M? 16. Remove 16mm ID heater water pipe from pipe near cam cover on RHS pointing down. 17. Remove short 90 degree 45mm water pipe from water pump snout to firewall pipes. 18. Remove the four long engine mount bolts. 19. Disconnect throttle linkage cable? Is this similar to a Testarossa? 20. Disconnect cables to FI computers. 21. Disconnect the two fuel feed lines from the filters. 22. Disconnect the hydraulic clutch lines. 23. Where are the coils and how do the HT wires attach between coils and engine? 24. Is there any other loom plugs to remove. 25. Is there a large breather pipe from the oil reservoir to the engine? 26. Are there any other water connections? 27. Lift out the engine. Where to lift from, what to use etc? Any help that you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. Just hit the quote button and add your data with a number alongside so I know what order to do the jobs. And if my written order can be better, don't by shy, stick your 50c worth in. Any help I can offer the guys in Japan means that the engine and remaining car will arrive here in good condition.
Removed rear bumper + shield + big bar ....... Took out all wire loom up to ECU's (maybe this is what you discrebed too) Please go to the Posting of SilverGts on his 512TR.... his photos show it all ...
Hi Mel, I did a search on SilverGts and he's a non profiled member with only nine posts in total. maybe you got the name wrong.
