Phil and I had a talk with the factory owner (I flew to U.K.) and a set of 5 were made as test. All sold in one week ... Many more batches of 10 each were produced last year but still sometimes Phil is completely out of diffs Phil is now the sole representatitve of these diffs ...
Rick I had no idea you were in for a major. If I remember correctly, you were on the fence about doing the diff? I shared the same feelings because many mechanics advised not doing it, almost made it sound as though they never break. This from FoO as well!! I like to sleep at night which is why I had mine done last major. As far as I'm concerned it's a no brainer to address it when the motors out. In your case, it's a good thing you had it checked while you were at it. Could you imagine if you dropped your fresh motor in, drove it home and it blew up? You'll now have piece of mind knowing you have many worry free miles ahead. Happy for you!
Hi Rob, I was on yr 7 this year for my service.....as you know, the weather was garbage this year, so I figured I would do the service now. I told him to lift the engine to go look and with the flashlight he looked and I had two small hairline cracks in the diff. Since I was this far gone , it became a no brainer.....with all the yak on the chat it got me paranoid I think it's easy being on the fence as this is a big expense, but if you plan to keep the car then you might as well go check on the next engine out if you have a car with an original one. The dilemma becomes what happens if you go looking and the original diff looks perfect These cars sure aren't for the faint of heart I am no longer against it or on the fence now
You dodged a big bullet rick. I recall you kept telling this community that the diff issues were over blowen..not so much the case now is it? . Any kind of fracture is a failure, and it would take only a short amount of driving to have a complete failure. I'm glad you checked it out and caught it before a complete and seriously costly rebuild was needed.
My diff looked perfect when I pulled it out. No visible cracks or damage but that doesn't mean anything, as we have all come to know. 50k on the car and all was fine but why take the chance. It's not a Honda, parts a dime a dozen, and cheap. Rick you are very lucky!!
November 2014 there was one more thread about our diff!! Look here ... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/boxers-tr-m/469580-testarossa-diff-failures.html
Hello Mel, as I'm writing this, my 512 TR is not going anywere because 2 weeks ago it just left me at a crossroad without any gear left. I was somewhat biassed about it because there was no single alarming sound and my first thought was a failliure in the shifting linkage. I did'nt even warmed my engine up completely so my pace was also in ease. You can imagine my feelings when I stood there with al that traffic and laughs of the spectators. This was not the case as a swift examination pointed out. After de clutchhousing was removed, the quillshaft could very easily pulled out. It was OK but in the end was something that surprised me on a very bitter way. The spline part of the primairy shaft was still in it and just torsioned off. Bingo! But I could'nt figure what caused this kind of failliure. As soon as de gearbox was removed this quickly came to an answer. The notorious diff had completely lost its hold along the weld. Exactly as you already pointed out in this thread. After reading this thread, I now know that this is no exeption but just a plain and logic process wich occurs anyway. My 512 TR is probably one of the most carefully maintained examples. It is allways driven gently by it's former owner wich I know very well for many years. I just want to share this with you all because I think this is a point of real concern and it almost seems rediculous to witness a part welded like that in a supercar that develops almost 500 Nm. I allready contacted Phil from Forza Components and will purchase his diff. This is not happening to me again that´s for shure. I allready found a primairy shaft and my next challenge is to find a proper 2nd speed gear for a price that makes common sense. Well I hope that I was of any added value with this report. thank you marcel for posting your bad experience and also the pictures. sad to hear how the people around where laughing when you had the breakdown. I know this very well from myself have also a primary shaft here looking the same as yours hope the new primary shaft is not the original? this is between the diff the most vulnerable part. on the former cars it was the drive shaft the most weakest part. this primary shaft is still good if the new diff will not break apart again. but phil gives livetime guarantee. if you would need a primary shaft made of much better material you may send me a PM. I have let made some for my TR koenig competition and would sell one of those because I think when I still have then 2 more in stock it is lasting until I will or can not drive anymore also you may have an exact look at the CP, not that you put all together and afetr a while the CP will break then. have a look at the rear side of the pinion if all the gears ( teeth ) are ok and not starting to break out. this also happened to me.
Sorry to hear vetroresina, what year is your car and curious did you have a lot of miles on it? I take it the broken off shaft was due to the break up of your carrier housing? I hope you get your car back together soon. Just curious for the people who have gone through this, can this carrier housing be replaced without pulling the engine out?
Thank you Joe, The thougth of having a strenghtened primairy is tempting but I just bought an other original one. I have to trust on the new Forza diff an hope that that will prevent this happen again. regards
It can be done Marcel, but you need all the lifting equipment and space to do it otherwise it is a real pain. IMO Phil
Ooooooooopppppssssssss ... Someone in NL (my own country ! ) reported: At the 50.000 km EO, he asked to inspect the oem diff .... Guess what ? Yes ..... completely round cracked ... VERY lucky guy who had read this thread and now has a Forza diff installed. One point was: the off F dealer first refused to install a non-oem diff .... that's now solved .... So ... for the non-believers .... It's Happening !!! Just a matter of WHEN !
