Mike, is it now summer in Down Under ? Here, it almost freezes in my garage ..... but I have indeed planned some work on it !
Hee ... hope it will be comfortable then ! Because the engine is now out, I could transport my car on a 1 ton trailer to its temporarely garage ... I also hope to do work soon in the engine bay and will have the grill and the bumpers sprayed in January ... Image Unavailable, Please Login
32 in Melbourne today Mel. Beautiful. Although expecting 33 and thunderstorms on Chrismas Day. That doesn't make you feel like eating lots.
Today, my gearbox is totally stripped ! The first picture shows all that is left of the differential casing .... Two casings are now on their way to a factory where each is completely 3-D measured. They will return in January and the crown and pinions will then be made based on these figures. So I don't think I will have much news the coming week unless the builder finds facts on all that came out of my gearbox... F.i. he is looking for a new or used first gear set ... Will keep you all posted !! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, contacted him this morning: it is M34 .... By the way: there were no reactions on my posting above here: " My gearbox specialist stated he already repaired over one hundred of them ... makes you think ... ! " Ooeppps .... who's next .... ?
Mel, I like your pic's, it looks like you have everything laid out nice, clean and efficient. Kind of like a gearbox hospital....................
Hi Ken, sorry: it's not me ... its at the place in Germany where my F gearbox repairshop fully regenerates my 512TR gearbox. But the pics he sends me are indeed giving a good feeling !
Can someone post some dimensions of the diff. here on the forum? I work as a machinist and maybe I could work something out on this side of the ocean. Dia of the ring gear flange, the OD. of the diff. body, the overall length etc. Ago
Very little progress to report ... rebuilding of a gearbox takes far more time than expected ....... My gearbox is now at the gearbox repairshop in Germany and I have to wait for the production of a new crown and pinion set. In the meanwhile, I was advised to get another 1st gear set because you can see wear on the teeth. (last picture but one) This will cause breaking of the teeth for sure one time .... so try and find something .... but where ? (Have you seen the PRICES at the F shops for these parts ...? Frightful ! This weekend I went to a Porsche breaker and went through his storage.. Guess what I found in a little corner, tucked away far ....... near to some F motorparts ... A cracked Testarossa diff ... ...> So I dug under some boxes and I found .... all internals of a Testarossa gearbox ... + the case/housing ! Isn't it stupid .. to find this in a Porsche shed ? They had replaced a gearbox of a Testarossa of which: crown and pinion were broken aswell as the diff.... (one more .........) They simply took another gearbox ... and stowed this lot in a box ... We looked at all the gears .... just on the floor... I bought the 1st gearset because it was spottles (see no wear) and has the correct set-numbers on it just in case... (in this case both the B103 marking) AMAZING: I also got mails/offers from foreign sellers of F parts .... you don't believe what they all want to sell .... (last picture) But always: NO diffs offered ... and no crown wheels too ... they had to be replaced because ... you know why ! Will keep you posted ... Hi Mel, really glad you got sorted. Is there no new 1st gears available from Ferrari any more or are they just ridiculously expensive?
Don't think so ... but I really didn't ask because of the prices at the F shops. Ferrari SPA will be even more expensive for sure... The F shops "around the world" try to sell you the gears separate, whilst they should always be a set !!! (Ricambi, Eurospares etc...) Isn't that really stupid and just a commercially attempt to just sell anything ? Also never buy a pinion wheel or crown wheel on its own ... they can also only be used if they are marked as a pair . So be aware if this ever happens to you ... Just VERY much luck Phil .... (for once )

All in all James, it shows that a gearbox is a very expensive part of the F cars ... I can buy a F512TR engine + gearbox for only K€ 11 ... which seems a bargain. But the engine I don't need (I hope) and the gearbox still needs modification or refurbishment... So what is the best bargain ? Imo the U.S. (Ebay) options are not .... sorry. My advise: get a new diff and put it in your gearbox in time .... If gearbox was intact: only diff and installing are the cost. If too late and more is wrong ... good luck.
I should receive a Newman solid differential next week. Since I have to do the major service this spring I decided it would be a good time to check the transmission and install a upgraded differential and avoid possible problems in the future. It would have been a harder decision if I wasn't doing the major service, but there seem to be very few parts at extremely high prices if worst happens and I do not have a complete service history on my TR. Jim
Hi David, no not really but my gearbox man explaned that if there is any space in the box, all parts start wear fast ... In this case, we found that the nut on that achse was not with the right torque and did gave space (talking about one hundredst of a mm ....) This may also have given the light noise that alarmed me.... (was only in first gear). Driving on with a damage like this can cause much bigger problems if one teehth breaks eventually... So I will replace it
So if I were looking for a car, listen for any gear noise, and if there is none it should be a keeper? Wes
