Because the engine is out now, one of the jobs I wanted to do is looking at the 512TR clutch. It is a rather simple clutch like in many cars: one plate and a pressure plate. An aexpert mentionned that to do the job really right, you should also look at the flywheel. Did you ever inspect it ? I never did before. It should not onlu be cleaned but also be shimmed / flattened so that is is as new again. Here are my pics to inform you; it is really the same flywheel ! (have a very close look at the surface ...) You can order plate and pressureplate at the F shop new: don't be surprised what they charge you .... I went to a clutch factory where they produce clutches only for trucks / lorries for advise. The suggested not to buy new parts but have it refurbished if plate and pressure plate were O.K ... They looked at my pressure plate and mentionned that the middle part-with- fingers (in Dutch: diafragma) shows also wear. So just a new clutchplate is not a good solution (in my case) ... I looke in UK for a refurbished 512TR (= 458 = 55- Maranello= 612) set and found one here. The difference in price is a lot .... I will show you pics when the refurbished clutch arrives.... Mel, I heard once from a UK resident that a Landrover clutch and pressure plate from a 110 series Defender is a near perfect fit. Might be worth looking into. Rob.
Thanx Robert ... I already have ordered the parts in U.K. and am happy with this solution. My message to the readers here is simple: not OEM may also be considdered as a good option ! And on't forget the flywheel !! Pics: the shipment from the old parts to the U.K. and a close-up from my diafragma / fingers that are worn, maybe cause by a stuck release bearing (dirty splines ... Mel, I had the same experience when I had the flywheel/double disc clutch in my Boxer rebuilt/machined/relined by ClutchMasters. It went out looking beat and abused, and came back looking brand new! It's been almost 5 years now, and is working fine! John
O.K. John, thanx for the reply ! But many only change the plate I hear ..... and do nothing on the flywheel (to much work ?) Indeed, technically this is the best way to go ahead imo ...
The new German Crown and Pinion (C&P) parts are IN now after 18 weeks of waiting ...... My gear box (gb) man has to do a 365 gb first ... this takes normally one full week. The Timken bearings are now pressed on the new U.K. differential(s) .... So by the end of May .... hopefully mine will be ready... Here the very first pics... Although it looked as if the parts were arriving in time (agreed was 18 weeks max) I have to tell you that my gb man is still waiting for the pinion... For that reason: no other feedback for now
Geeze Mel, that has to be extreamly frustrating to say the least! Good luck getting her together soon! John
Well GOOD news at last .... The brand new made Crown and Pinion are ready .... My gearboxbuilder has 2 gearboxes to make; mine will be the second one.... but the only one with the new U.K. Forza Components differential ! The last photo shows the broken and new pinion achse ..... So I hope that in two weeks my gearbox will be assembled and shimmed .... Will keep you posted ! Mel, What bolts are you using to fix the crown wheel to the diff? Apparently there was an upgrade and there is some improvement over the original bolts. I haven't purchased any new ones just yet. What is the consensus of opinion on crown wheel bolts.
We must ask my gearboxbuilder about the updated bolts Robert next week ... He is a driver in the Le Mans Classic races so he is away until Monday ..... Thanx mate !
Parts arrived today (new pinion)..... pffffffffffffffffffff..... (looks like the thread of Mr Chairman ...) will keep you posted the coming weeks again ! The proces of (test) fitting will start asap, followed by the complete assembly of the gb and the shimming of the new diff ... New bolts are indeed needed Robert, without "collars" ... size: (euro specs) M10x1,25x35 H10.9 and Loctite 270 (33Nm) or 278 (42Nm). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Right ............. parts are there ... gerabox housing cleaned ... coming week assemblage ... Can hardly wait ! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mel, Why not take advantage of the time and strip re-paint the GB as Robert did in his rebuild--looks brand new...
Tempting indeed ! I should then do the engine also .... Time reason I guess ... remember ... the box is in another country (Germany) ...and I hope to collect it on Tuesday ... bring it back to Holland again ! Then I am in a hurry to install it back under the engine, install the engine and drive finally again after 8 months ... Nobody looks under the car ... Most probably, what I will do is I will engrave the date of "July 2012" near the gb number because of the upgrade so people can see from the outside when the diff was changed. But ................... you made me start thinking about it Tim !!
Hi Mel, Is you are looking for someone who can strip it and paint it perfectly, you can send me a PM.. for a f-chat friend price !! Greets Jasper
Hi Jasper, niet nodig, gaan we dinsdag gewoon ff doen, thanx !!! En dan alles vlotjes inbouwen .... we zien elkaar ! ([email protected]) Tim did give me a thought and I think he did the right thing .... we will see soon !
Mel, I was just saying that I would do the job myself, but I can imagine that you want to drive asap. See you!
Man ..... have I learnt a lot today .... travelled to Germany to my gb builder and watched breathless for 5 hrs .... I learnt there: Installing a diff is NOT that simple, I can (now) assure you. RTFM is the wording ! It is all in the WSM, but we simply cannot read it or have no experience ... For instance: measuring the preload is well described but not right interpreted I know now ... Anyway, all was tested today and far within the norms ... pffff...... happy !! Some pics .... I have dozens; in case of questions, you may also mail [email protected] . Now: install the gb under the engine, next week: mount the engine and testing ! At last ... GB is in its place ... we now continue with assembling the new (refurbished) clutch ... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looking good Mel. Hmmm..................those engine mounts need a bit of detailing though. Maybe I'd better come over for a trip?
