    Hi all,

I have always been meaning to ask....

when I fire up the 512TR, there is a high pitched beeeeep sound, more like a whistle... sounds like some sort of pump or vacume? The sound stays for about 1 to 2 mins.... then it shuts off. I thought this sound was comming from the oil pump, since at idle on cold start, the oil pressure needle is just over the "6" mark (canadian spec, oil pressure in KPA??? ), but when the beep sound shuts off, oil pressure is still at the higher level.. Once engine temp is at optimal, the oil pressure goes back to normal, around 4

    so what is this sound?

    thanks for any input
    regards
    Manny

Perhaps it is related to the air pump...which injects air into the exhaust stream only until there is sufficient temps for the cats operate properly. Does it only do this at cold start up?

See section C in your OM -- not the easiest place to access, but have a listen to electric motor/pump N and the inrush noise at filter P as Jeff suggested:

Don't know what causes it, but mine used to do that too. Wouldn't think it's anything to worry about.

Aren't you referring to the static electricity on one of the belts? Usually that disappears after a few minutes.

it's a completely different car but it sounds like the same issue w/my benz...i was told it was the air compressor - and as jeff mentioned above, it happened usually when it was started during colder temps (not that it gets that cold in so. florida..but we have our times...). strangely, it went away on it's own after about 10 days?

That must be it... air pump... this only happens on cold start. Thanks everyone....

Hmm... I have the same system on my C5 Corvette Z06 and Jetta 1.8T... air pump activates, sending air to exhaust manifold, ... something used in order for cold emission tests or something...

    Manny,
For What it is worth, and not having heard the sound. My 84 V-12 XJS Jaguar has a cold start circuit that passes air thru 1 air filter only of the 2 . At cold start there is an intake whistle that exists only at idle and just off idle and only when cold. The whistle goes away with a little throttle application or after anywhere from a few seconds to up to 3 minutes depending on how cold it is outside. Has done this for 15 years.

Bet that is what it is.

    Tony
