I tried starting my 512TR today, and encountered the following problem: As I turned the ignition key, the usual ignitions lights came up but the starter motor didn't catch. Instead reasonbly loud clacking noises (repeats about 3-4 a second) came from underneath the engine towards the rear of the car. I turned off the ingnition and the noise stopped. Tried a few times and got the same result. Car has been running fine for several months, and I recently re-charged the battery. Any help would be much appreiciated.
It just sounds like the battery is low. If you can, check the voltage while someone is turning the key.
Dead........................battery..........................well.............almost............click............click..............click
sounds like a battery low. I tried to fire up my 512TR today (its been 4 weeks in storage)... battery was wayyyy to low, and it didn't even get that clicking sound...I know have it slow charging ... gonna fire it up tomorrow and annoy some neighbours.
if the battery is not weak then it may be that the teeth in the starter motor are not engaging properly Ive had this problem before, if you try to start it several times it may catch 1 of those times
well, i charged my battery last night, and this afternoon, she started on the first crank! weird thing, my car starts better in the cold/winter...than it does in the summer...
Mine also starts better colder...............It gets a nice rich mix, and it likes it! Get your charging system checked to see if it is keeping the battery up to snuff.
Thanks to everyone for the help which was spot on. I hadn't realised just how deeply discharged the battery was after 4 weeks. A CTEK XS 3600 charger & conditioner did the trick. Will keep it connected using the battery conditionning mode to keep the battery topped up.
