I am in the market to buy either the 512tr or Modena, any sugestion wich one is better car?
Depends what you are after really. 8 vs 12, classic vs modern looks etc. I had that lingering thought months ago when I finally decided on 512TR.
I had several 512TR's ...... which I loved. Then I went to a Modena for 3 years, and recently returned to a 512TR. The Modena is an excellent car .... however, there is NOTHING like the look, sound, and 12 cyl. power of the 512TR. My verdict: For the track - Modena. For the street - 512TR all the way!!
Theres Nothing better looking than a 512TR & its far more collectable than a Modena. The 512 is livable & can be used as a daily driver. Maintenance on the Modena is probably cheaper though & parts easier to find but you'll see 100 other Modenas whereas you may see 1 other 512TR very rarely
you really need to drive both...i think the 512 will hold its value better, due to its lower numbers...service is easier and cheaper on the 360, which is a car you can put real miles on....the 360 is easier to drive, with power steering, easier shifting and lighter clutch....it more of an everyday car, easier to get in and out of ...the 512 is more exotic, in its looks , driving position, its wide size and its v12 sound....i would like to have one of each........
Totally incomparable... They both in different class, engine size, time... and design. As a matter of fact there is no Ferrari outright better than the other, just different in the taste of the owner... My advise; test drive both and feel for youself which is most suited your liking...
Test driving is your best friend....... But from a maintenance perspective.. The 512TR's engine had to come out for belt service and the modena does not.. A little more costly for the TR but its worth it.
I think you are right, from the stats 0-60 360 is faster but beyond that 12 cylinders really show what they are made of!
Dan Ciesniewski, 0-60MPH is achieved in 4.7 SECS on a UK spec 512TR. A 360 does it in 4.6 SECS (it's more or less evens up to 100MPH) then after that a 512TR just pulls away from the 360. I know because a friend has raced my dads' 512TR in his 360 on numerous occassions and this happens every time. Plus we've also raced a couple of strangers in 360's too.
But, if you want the fastest car, you wouldn't be getting a Ferrari anyway. They're so many much faster cars for way less money out there than any Ferrari. A Ferrari is an emotional purchase for the total driving "experience", not just 0-100kph stats. That being the case, if you want a Ferrari road car it has to have 12 cylinders, especially if it will be your first or only Ferrari. If you plan to own more than one Ferrari at a time, by all means get an 8 to play with on the track while you still get to have a proper Ferrari 12 cylinder car for road use ...
i've owned both. to say they are two different cars is a grossly understatement. i loved them both for "totally & completely" different reasons. as the standard recommendation in this forum "try them both on" for size and see which one jazzes you the most. best luck to you.
This was a great thred with sime excellent input I would like to add a twist to the original question. I currently have a 1990 TR with Tubi and was thinking of a 360 Spider or 512TR and was curious whether anyone would comment on whether the difference in driving experience in total that I would feel going from the base TR to the 512 would be significantor not. I know the benefits of the 12 vs 8 issue I also have a 355 which I love. Martin
Like your twist...here is my twist .... owned an 1990 Testarossa (stock).. had the chance to buy an 360 Modena.. However, purchased the 512 tr.. Much improvement over the first series car.. thats my twist...whats yours???
I much prefer the 360. Smaller, lighter, feels quicker, definitely faster at most tracks, more modern, more reliable...not even close in my book. Gary
wow, now thats impressive ....now if only they were al least somewhat reliable still the best looking ferrari EVER!!!
I average about 2500 miles a year and have had no reliability issues with my 94 512TR. However, the engine out service is a wallet buster.
