As part of the upgrade process on my Mondials I turned my attention to the fuse box. As the car was designed at least quarter of a century ago I figured it would be possible to improve the technology in the box.

So, I had my electronics bloke (who is working on the 355/360/550/575/F50/etc LED tail lights) take a box apart.

We found that the circuitry is laid out in 5 separate layers and a bit crude by todays standards. There are 2 moulded plastic panels that (1) have the connections and (2) have the plug guides.

I am looking having the following done:

    A) Producing a modern 6 layer PCB to cover all the circuits of the old box and have a few spare circuits for new equipment.

    B) Evaluating the possibilty of replacing the old-style relays with solid state.

    C) Keeping the same shape (but new) sockets so that the old box is simply unplugged and the new one plugged in.

    D) Replacing the wiper controller with something better.

    E) Putting the whole lot in a metal box for durability.

I will have 10 boards created but only use 2 myself. I won't be having the other boards built up unless anyone else wants them.

I have no idea of price yet but the end result will be modern, durable and have room for expansion. This project is non-profit making for me. If anyone is interested in joining in for the other boxes please let me know.

If your guy can do all of that and keep the price within the land of reason, sign me up for one.

I am more than interested? What time frame and price range? This sounds awsome.

If it will work for an '84 Mondial QV Euro-spec car, I'd be interested too, price being within reason.

Is the 3.2 the same layout as the T? They look similar but I don't have my parts guide here right now.

    Thanks,

    Guys,

I'm going to race Zertec on this one. I used to work for one of the big 3 and still have friends (on the inside) who are willing to take this project on as well.

DOES ANYONE HAVE SCHEMATICS? If so, please send them along with any information on circuits that you have issues with. So far I have identified the fuel pump, AC, and cooling fan circuits as "problem children". These boards are not multilayer boards but rather 4 layers (at least on both of mine) placed on top of each other.

Also, if you can please verify my relay and fuse placement. My fuse box sticker differs from my Owner Manual and I'm not to sure about all the fuses on the left hand side of the box.

    If reasonable, I'm in also.
The fusebox is THE Achilles heel of the entire car.

    Many thanks for your engineer.

Any update on this? I had a problem with my fuse box this weekend. Had a new radio installed last week and found that when I stepped on the brake or put on the turn signal, the radio would cut out. Turns out the old radio (the new one was hooked to the old hot lead) was wired to the brake/turn signal circuit instead of the radio circuit. After some fooling around, it turned out to be a poor connection at the fuse box. But I can tell that this is a major problem -- the damn fuse box.

Hopefully, someone will come up with a replacement unit SOON! Thanks guys.

I am doing some research and decided on the ATC/ATO fuses for this project. My fusebox uses the European style ceramic. The fuse blocks "clip" into the PCB board. I've noticed that Zertec has the GM style (ATO/ATC) type fuse block. Does anybody know if this just clips into the PCB board like the ceramic style block does? Please let me know.

Also, does anybody have any preference on RELAYs? In doing my research I thought of maybe changing to OMRON solid state relays because my Honda (never had an electrical problem) uses them. When I went to the OMRON site they still make the ISO standard footprint relays (just like the BOSCH in most of our cars) so I think I will keep the relays (footprint) the same.

If you have any input on this project please let me know. I want to make the best possible board. Like Zertec, I want to keep the footprint of the box the same, in fact I think the very first boards will be replacement boards with new components. My engineer says that we will probably wind up using a real 5 layer board to replace the flimsy platic boards that burn out so quickly.

Also, any donations of old boards/units would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 1984 and if I understand correctly this should fit from '83 to 88. If you have any knowledge as to otherwise again, please let me know.

We get one chance at seperating the layers and since I only have 1 board that I'm willing to part with I'm having my engineer take his time. The whole idea here is that at a minimum we can reproduce the current layout with better layers. Not working at the plant anymore I'm not sure what CAD equipment they are going to run this through but already they are telling me that they are thing 5 layer on 1 board.

Once again, anyone having an older board that is sitting around I would be glad to accept donations or even pay some monies for the boards/fuse box.

Once the CAD layout is out I'll post a message and see how many of us need boards (leverage in #'s). Please post you email address or mail me @ [email protected] if you are interested. Thanks.

Just confirming: I am definetely interested in a fuse box for a t Cab. My e-mail is [email protected]

Unfortunately I just missed an auction on e-Bay for 348 fuse box which sold for just 25 EUR. Next time I will be more alert ...

I was just on Ferrari UK's site and the fuse panel assembly for a 328 looks VERY similar to the Mondial's. Does anyone know if the 328 panel can work in a Mondial?

    Zertec,

    Any news?

At my present fuse panel's rate of decay I am going to be VERY desparate in about 4 weeks.

    OK Guys,

As of today it looks like we'll have the Gerber/Autocad files ready by Friday. Some time in the middle of next week we will have the Proto ready and test for about a week.

After testing well take it into production. I found a place called pcb4less that looks like it can do a 6 layer board for a reasonable price. I will need a commitment of at least 10-15 boards to make the minimum but I'll solidify that later on this post.

So far, we have decided to do 6 layers on solid board using 3 oz copper. For the connectors I have chosen Anderson Power Pole's product because of the reputation. I'll be calling them as soon as the proto is done because we wont have dimensions until we actually get our hands on the 1st few boards. Omron seems to have some nice Bosch-like solid state relays which I'll be using on my board (ISO footprint) to alliviate some of the heat issues.

If anybody has any input (i.e. schematics, old boards) or anything you think would help please let me know. If you're OK with everything here just keep reading and I'll let everyone know when its time to place the initial order. Thanks and below are a couple links with verbiage on the products I'm looking at using.

Yes, it's all sounding very good to me. I'm curious if you have a ballpark figure on the cost yet? I think one of these would do the trick for my ailing electrics, and I like the idea of solid state relays. Please let us know what the range might be on cost. As long as it's not megabucks, I'm definitely in for one unit.

Guys, I think layer 6 should hold the 2 (maybe 3) largest electric bandwidth hogs. Let me know what goes out on your board because we will take layer 6 and dedicate the real estate on the board to those circuits we deem most worthy. Top on my list are:

    #1 FUEL PUMP
    #2 AIR CONDITIONING
    #3 ELECTRIC FAN(S)
    #4 HEADLIGHTS

Please let me know if you agree or disagree. Thanks

I have been told that I need to look at getting a replacement so I would be interested but need to know how much this would cost.

Does anyone know what the approx price that a good late model replacement should be worth second hand? Just in case one mysteriously appears and I know if Im being ripped off!

Also would any other fusebox fit from any other model or was the Mondial unique in its fitments and layout?
