I recenlty purchase a 2001 550 with 3,000 miles and Notice that my brakes are squeaky when I make slow stops. I asked the dealer I purchased the car from and even asked my service manager and they both said thats normal for a 550 to make that squeaky noise when cold and making slow stops.
Are they right or Im I missing something?

Basically, most dealers and service managers will say it is normal for 550's, and in a way, they are right. Apparently, the stock brake pads for the Maranello are made of very hard material. Unless they are very hot, they will squeel like stuck pigs. Since most people dont track their cars, the brakes rarely get hot enough to get silent. Some swear by "conditioning" their brakes with a few heavy duty stops...Ive even heard of a method whereby a few hard stops in reverse can help. Ive tried all these methods...to no avail.

What DOES work, is changing your brake pads. I now use Porterfield pads after hearing people swear by them on this site, and they work like a charm!
Absolutely no noise...period! And, as a added bonus, they dust less as well.
As for stopping power, I have detected no difference from my old stock pads.

So do yourself a favor, and get new pads...you will love them...no more embarrasing squeeling at every light. Its a no brainer...just do it!
