I am having problem with a crack piston in the caliper of my front left so have been thinking about upgrading the braking system on my 1993 non ABS 512TR with a good used 550 system, is this possible?

No Need to reinvent the wheel. You can get an awesome set of Brembo F50 brakes for the front or back for about $3500 for either 2 front or 2 rears

If you get fronts remember to uprate the pads in the rear.

The reason for asking is because I'm being offered a used pair of 550 so curious to whether they will fit or not.

its important to have stronger brakes in the rear of a TR to keep the tail from swinging under braking from high speed

I think you'll have to make new brackets to make them fit

I have discovered another option as locally there is this racing brake specialist who told me that he could replace the piston with newly custom make aluminum piston which will be more less exactly the same as the cracked one.
Does this sound ok with you guys?

Um er #%*& 'more or less' is not what I would settle for. Have him replace it with a Teves part not a a fab shop creation. even the best race shops do not make their own brake parts!

Just got my car back and it brakes well as I had all the brake pads changed also as it was due. It feels good but probably have to wait a while to see the reaction of this new custome-made piston!

Nothing wrong with making a piston, but material choice is critical.

"Aluminium" would most likely expand too differently that the std steel piston. So I'd double check what was used.

The problem might not be noticed until it's too late... ie under extreme usage/requirements
