I have a query which has probably been done to death but despite searching I can’t find a definitive answer. My 550 runs well but I’m planning a trip to Italy and can’t find any evidence of the known fuel pump mount issues being dealt with so I plan to deal with it before it fails 1000 miles from home! Plan is to take the pumps out and replace the mounts with Fabio’s units. I understand the unit is a simple swap but unsure as to other parts to replace at same time or does his mount solve the degrading plastic issues on it’s own. If the plastic caps are still there I can swap them out for the Superperformance metal ones but they are expensive so unsure if it’s sensible to suck it up to prevent problems in the future. Option 1 - Fabio’s unit on its own. Option 2 - Fabio’s unit plus new Bosche pumps Option 3 - Fabio’s unit plus pumps and the metal fuel pump tops.
I did “option 3” on my 550 two years ago. Since all of the components you mention fail eventually, and since you have to remove the pump assemblies from the fuel tank (and first drain the tank) to replace any one of them, you might as well do them all together. The fuel pumps are Bosch units that cross references to several other cars, including the Kia Rondo, for about 1/3 of the cost of the Ferrari part #, so don’t waste your money on the Ferrari part (unless you want a Ferrari part box as a souvenir...that's one expensive box!). Fabio's Teflon isolator is a no-brainer and won't deteriorate over time like the OEM rubber ones do. The OEM plastic pump mounting plate, which the entire pump assembly inside the fuel tank mounts up to, will eventually crack and leak fuel. The billet aluminum replacement plate is available in the U.S. via G.T. Car Parts in Phoenix, AZ. I believe Ricambi has them, too. Two years ago they were $272.50 each but the price has probably gone up since then. You will also need to purchase two plate gaskets (inexpensive) plus two wiring harness adapters to connect the OEM fuel pump connector plug to the post-type terminals on each aluminum pump plate (also inexpensive). https://gtcp.com/product/upgraded-aluminum-fuel-pump-mounting-plate-for-ferrari/
That’s super kind thanks. They are €300 now but I’ll get them ordered. I was curious about the wiring as the OEM terminal different. Do you happen to know the part numbers for the plate and the harness adapter? I’ll get cracking on those too. Really appreciate the help
Be aware that on the GTCP plates, there is no Left and Right versions. Brian Crall did mine and had to get creative in routing the lines on the Left side because they run above the terminals. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
When I replaced the pump mounts with Fabio's the covers had never been removed before as shown by the factory paint marks on the ring nuts. I used these paint marks to tighten the ring nuts back to where they were, as overtightening them could cause the cover to crack. '00 550 with 60k miles then, now 64k and still no leak with no appparent crack on the covers (touch wood).
