My '97 550 is undergoing a full repaint (long story - please don't ask or flame me!) and the body shop needs to get underneath the clear plastic lens cover of the headlight in order to paint the body coloured area.

However, at first glance it looks like the headlight is a fully sealed unit - I believe the plastic lens has been permanently glued in place. Is this the case, or can one remove the cover only to paint the surface inside? I tried looking up the parts on eurospares but it's not obvious whether the plastic lens is available as a separate part.

Obviously replacing the whole headlight unit would be extremely expensive so not very keen to go down this route!

Any idea on a cost effective solution would be most welcome (plus likely cost of parts).

    Many thanks,

    Harris

The plastic lens is not available as a spare; the 550 lamps are sold based on the color code of the factory-prepainted plastic, and be prepared to know whether you have Glasruit or PPG paint.

There probably is a way to separate the lens and repaint. Resealing the unit in a very dry environment will be critical to ensure no interior condensation or fogging.

We had these (red, glasruit, euro bulbs) a while back:

Lens is glued in. People have cut them open before to clean the inside, then glued them back. There were a couple of threads on this topic before.

I bought a pair of new headlights a couple of years ago when mine got very dirty inside the lens. Recently I found out while retro fitting HID lights into the assembly that you can remove the rear cluster so it's possible to clean inside the lens without cutting it open.

In your case for re-paint, you'd have to cut it open to do that.

Can you PM me some info for the HID retrofit?

And I've heard it was possible to seperate the lense from the rest of the assembly.

I actually took them apart for the same reasons last night.
-remove your ballast and all bulbs out of the rear of the headlight
-preheat your oven to 250 degrees
-once fully heated set the timer for 10 min
-the oven will heat the glue and make it soft
-With gloves on reach your hand into the high beam hole and press up on the lense cover while pulling on the black headlight assemble.
    -It will slide right out
-the painted piece is actually a sepeperate piece from the highlight and comes out, have that painted.

Wow - thank you all for your responses. What a great resource this site is.

Harmony.a.s.: can I presume you mean 250 fahrenheit? Sorry about the dumb question, but local temps are quoted in centigrade so I just want to be sure I don't confuse the workshop.

    Cheers,

    Harris
