    Hi all. Has anyone out there noticed a quite significant vibration in the front hood of their 550 at 90-100mph? I've been driving my new (well, '98 actually) 550 for a week now, and I've found that at this sort of speed the hood vibrates visibly, particularly on the driver's side, and there's also some vibration feedback through the steering wheel. Is this normal or could I be looking at some other problem, e.g. a wheel/suspension issue causing the vibration? Any feedback gratefully received :)

    No vibration here, not even at 125...sounds like wheel balance ot me..

    I'm pretty sure it's never been crashed - as far as one can be sure about these things. The car's low mileage (just turned 10k miles) and the history file seems 100% complete with no trace of any accident-related work.

    I've done some searching on other threads and it looks like issues with the 'Hood open' warning light are fairly common, but nothing similar to my problem.

    I'm beginning to suspect a problem with the balance of the wheel on that corner - so that's the first thing I'm going to have checked tomorrow.

    Congratulations for driving it fast enough to make the hood ripple! Ain't it great? They all do it! Just you wait until you get it over 160 and the hoodlatch warning light comes on! A thrill on top of a thrill! ;)

    Thrilling indeed! Reassuring to know it's an 'Undocumented feature' rather than a major problem. I was just concerned that if I continued to accelerate the ripple would become bigger until the whole hood blew off. Now that really would be a thrill and a half :)

    Mine used to do both the wobble and the light over 130mph, both were solved by:
    1. Adjust the bonnet rubbers : takes 5 minutes with a spanner, even I could do it, and;
    2. Replaced the switch at some cost or other - can't remember off hand but it wasn't much at the main dealer.

    Mine also did the same thing but I am sure that speed was only the legal limit... Here are some photos of my 550 in China

    Thanks for all the information guys. As it turns out there was a problem with the balance of one of the front wheels that seems to have been causing excessive vibration at one corner. However a quick run down the motorway post re-balancing indicates that, although the problem has greatly diminished, there may still some final adjustment to be done. Got to go find my toolbox and have a look at that underbonnet rubber trim.... :)
