Hello, I just purchased a new to me 99 550 in Grigio Alloy. This board has been really helpful so far and I was hoping someone would have some insights into the exhaust I have. I noticed that my car gets louder at idle and quiets down over 2500/2800-ish RPM, almost like a valve is being closed. It doesn't get much louder at WOT up to 7500 either. Sure enough, once I slow the engine down back comes a deeper engine note. I got under the car and noticed two rear mufflers that have 575 stamped on them. A quick google search indicates these may Tubi mufflers but given the sound there is no way that could be the case. Does anyone know what this muffler is or why it would be so quiet? Is there an easy way to force the valves open at all times to compare? Here's a pic of what I'm seeing under the car - https://photos.app.goo.gl/isdEfckL2AV8Uxp46 Thanks!
You have second generation Tubi mufflers which are a bit quieter than the first generation unembossed Tubis. They do not have valves.
What Barry said. I have the "575" Tubis on my 550 as well. Look on the edge of the muffler ahead of the first "5" and you'll see the Tubistyle tag. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. I'll try to take a video. The car is really quiet. I was surprised to learn there's an aftermarket muffler on it.
Hi and welcome to our great forum and community. Your car in that color tells about your excellent taste!! It is not enough to just replace the rear mufflers on a 550. I have sport catalyzers and the original mid muffler and rear Fuchs sport muffleres with valves (usually always open). Now considdering to also take off the sport catalyzers to make it more old school in the sound.
Replace your center resonator with straight pipes to make your exhaust louder. You'll pick up some extra horsepower too... Image Unavailable, Please Login
It’s highly likely that your car is still quiet because the center resonator is still in place. If you want more noise remove this piece first and replace with straight pipes. There are threads on this here. These exact 575 Tubi’s were on my ‘02 575 when purchased and they do make some sound but not a huge amount. The early 575’s had the same center resonator on them which was dropped and replaced by straight pipes from the factory in later models. Edit, Barry beat me to it. His pic above shows his replacement straight pipes. Bill FL
I have a pair of straight pipes I took off my 575. I think they will fit the 550, but someone on here can confirm/deny that, I hope. I would sell them or trade for something “Ferrari” .
We were posting at the same time, Bill. I had those straight pipes made up for me in 321 SS eleven years ago based on research being done in Australia: Question about 550 X-pipe exhaust mods I have the second generation Tubi mufflers in back.
