What are 550 Maranello's going for. My father is looking to trade up to a Daytona and wants to know what his car is worth. It's a black/black '99, 3K miles, sheilds, red calipers, daytona seats, black/red carpets, custom hands free phone for V60, Bazooka in the trunk, 18" Kinesis wheels, black/polished lip.

Big question is whether he's done the major or not. I would say 110ish to a savvy buyer? Maybe 115 due to low mileage.

Dan, those figures seem low based on what I've seen. I bought a '99 550 6 months ago, and at that time the 1999 or later cars with those prices had stories or were euro cars, service or no service. Also I think since then inventory on these cars has gotten smaller.

If there is not a full history on the car I would walk away, its not worth the risk. Btw this car was for sale 6 months ago when I was looking. Best of luck, its a fantastic car just get the right one.

He would know if he did a major service, it's at least $5k.

Tubi adds 0 to pricing, so far as I can tell.

Stan: a little low, yes, but that's what I'd be getting to at the end of the day, or trying anyways. The low mileage might carry it a bit. The wheels might be a deterrent, if anything.

Dan, I agree with your feelings about the Tubi and wheels, if they don't have the originals. The lack of history should me a major concern. I' curious what they are asking for the car.

$110K, maybe less since he can't "remember" if a major service was done. Without documented service history, many buyers will likely be wary. Also, black/black doesn't seem to be a difficult color combo to find.

What value would you place on a '00 550, 3400 mi., well optioned, desirable color combo and without the major service done

What would be the big risk without a full history? The car has 3k miles. Any dealer can do a PPI and tell you everything you would need to know about the car.

FWIW, maybe Dr. Who will see this thread (or you could PM him).

For a while, Dale was tracking 550 prices and even kept up a database. I don't know if he's still doing so or not, but it might be worth investigating).

A 2000 Maranello with roughly 3,500 miles, complete dealer 30k service and extended FNA warranty just sold for $136,500.

Prices on low-mileage 550s have firmed up. I suspect that they will get even stiffer (sic) when the birds and bees come out this Spring.

    Dr. Who,

Do you have any similar comps for this one:

    550 MARANELLO - Black - 2000 - (the paint is metallic w/ gold flakes)
    Approx 9000 miles
Owner has paper work on all maintenance etc.
    Options:
Bordeaux leather interior, Ferrari badges, Tubi exhaust, Radar detector built in to the dash -covers front and rear. Added an amp and rear speakers to the stereo system. 6 disc CD changer.
    Also Added:
    Wheels/Tires - HRE 3 pcs wheels , Michelin tires - front: 255/40ZR18 rear: 335/30ZR18, approx $10K spent for these.

    Disclosure:
    1. Small 6" crack on front windshield passenger side.
    2. The car was keyed from left front all the way to the rear. Berli's Body shop fixed it
    in 2002.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I wouldn't consider a 6" crack to be "small." I'd get it fixed before selling it. I just bought my 550 last week, and I walked away from a number of them for looking "un kept" (figuring the overall condition reflected on the mechanical condition). - Tim

Sorry, I just wrote up a long response and lost it. Damn computers.

Let's use the 2000 Maranello that just sold for $136,500 as a benchmark.

    1. Your car has roughly twice the miles, but it is still under 10k. Personally, I don't see this as a problem, but many do.

    2. Factory options add very little to resale value. They just make a car easier to sell.

    3. After-market options can actually hurt resale value if you didn't keep the original parts. This includes Tubi exhausts.

    4. Warranty is a big issue. All 2000 Maranellos are out of factory warranty. You can get the extended warranty, but the car must have had its 30k service and the service must be done by a Ferrari dealer. The service and warrant will cost somewhere between $5k and $10k. Personally, I wouldn't own a late model Ferrari without the warranty. Don't ask me why I think this.

    5. The windshield is a big issue. Replacements are VERY expensive.

    6. The paint issue doesn't brother me, but not everybody agrees with me on this point. Frankly, the factory paint is not the benchmark in the industry. However, the car that just sold had some paint work, so I'd call this even.

So if your car has not had the 30k service and gotten the extended warranty, I'd knock off roughly $10k for this. The windshield, I haven't a clue.

My guess is that between $120k and $125k.

    Hope this helps, Dale

The owner told me it would cost $3-4K to replace the windshield. He is pricing it at $125K and says he has been offered $115K wholesale. So your price makes sense if the paint is a no impact item. From another post I did I would say the paint is a big deal to around half the posters.

Is it possible to get in a 550 that is worth having for around $100-110K? What is the expected life (in miles) for a F car?

Sounds like this guy is right on the money.

As far as expected life, it is "smiles per mile" that count. Never forget that a Ferrari is just one generation removed from the race track. This is what makes these cars special. You ain't buying a Caddy or a Porsche.

    Good luck, Dale

Hey Dale, I'm just getting familiar with 550s and was advised that the following items should be checked closely during the PPI. Care to add anything else to the list?

    Anti rollbar bushes
    Engine mounts
    exhaust manifold
    Shocks
    Valve guide
    various recalls/service bulletins

The water hose that goes under the fuel injectors. This cost me about $1,500.

1 It's a problem but not expensive to fix
2 It's a problem but moderately expensive to fix and wwwaaayyyy expensive to ignore.
3 Rare problem only heard of one.
4 A problem but not common
    5 Not a problem on 550's
6 Recalls are free to fix, only costs 20 cents to call local dealer to see if any are outstanding. TSB's are good to look out for, an experienced late model Ferrari mechanic will know what to look for. The hoses Dale mentioned are one of them.

550's can be hard on brakes and $$$ to replace them, clutches are spendy too take a peek at the wear guide.

With all due respect to your depth of knowledge of Ferraris, your last comment made me laugh - putting Caddys and Porsche in the same categories.. Might I remind you that Porsche has won many more races with their "street cars" than Ferraris - I won't start a list but Le Mans comes to mind. Reliability over pure speed goes a long way to win races. I will agree though with your above statement to the extent that Porsches are not one generation removed, they actually sell what they race.. That said, being irrational I too am looking getting a 550... but to replace my current F-car... plan to keep the Porsche though to pick up groceries..

The beauty of the 550 is that you ARE able to drive down and pick up your groceries in it. At home I have two daily drivers, MB and 550. My wife has an M3 with SMG. Depending on how we are parked, I will take the 550 every time over the M3. As to worrying about car parking incidents, it costs exactly the same to remove a parking scratch/ding out of a MB, BMW, Porsche or Ferrari.
IMO the only benefit of 911 over the 550 is using the rear seats as storage area, and the gear change. They really need a Porsche gearbox engineer to show Ferrari how to make a gearchange operate.

Geeze, I happen to like Porsches also. But, Porsche road cars are typically more refined than a similar Ferrari, or, as I have recently discovered, a Maserati. Thus, a Porsche is much better choice as a daily driver. This is not to say that you can't drive a modern Ferrari every day, but why would you want to?

As for the Caddy reference, it ain't my style. However, you gotta admit that the old gal is making some headway. Perhaps playing those Led Zep songs have started some ear worms in those brain dead design rooms:

"WELL, ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I ROCK 'N ROLLED."

All I can say is today with light snow..my son and I were out cruising in the Vette and we came across someone in these wonderful 550/575 models..

what a stunning car..exuding sensuality with every curve of the sheetmetal...

Certainly more money than I would spend but truly a stunning car.

    Wow!

We didn't go that fast or past 100mph...but it was fun to cruise down the highway, front and back for quite a few miles....

The power to weight ratio of my "worked" Z06 might be slightly better than the beautiful Ferrari but at a certain point you have to say...Who cares!

What a great ride you guys have...
