So dad and I are looking to buy a 550 and we went up to have a look at one today. It's the first time we have driven one. All I can say is WOW. Awesome car!!! Very easy to drive and very refined. The only only issue we had was it is too quite. We were wondering what is sounds like with a Tubi,

Is there anyone around with a 550 with a Tubi we can come by and listen to? Thanks!!

Sounds like he has an awesome relationship with his dad.

I'd probably phrase it the same way, so would my dad.

    Sorry, no 550 here.

Err I meant to say it's too quiet, not too quite :)

My earliest memories are in the passenger seat of Dad's '61 250 SWB. I learned to drive (not the basic skills, but really drive) in his 308, (and it's how I met my first real girlfriend). Now he has a 328, and for the last 2-1/2 years we have been building an FFR Cobra together. Great project!!
Since the first time I saw one, I have thought the 550 is the nicest of the modern Ferraris. And now, the opportunity has come along to own one. We are not rich, we just love the cars, and neither one of us can afford it alone, so we are pooling our resources. He's selling the 328 (I'll be posting it after we take some pics) and I'm comming up with the remaining cash. So it is a joint purchase :)

Mark Gold used to always tell me to take his 550 for a ride, I always declined until a guy I worked with finally agreed. I really don't enjoy (at all) driving anybody elses cars, let alone a Ferrari.

However I agreed with you... WOW. Mark's had an exhaust (Tubi?) and remains one of the nicest sounding cars I have ever driven. There is something special about something that looks so elegant and so handsome emitting such a wonderful howl. I never came close to getting on it, but I would imagine at full blast it would be amazing.

By far one of my favorite modern Ferrari's. I also worked on a 550 on Monday that had straight pipes/x pipe but still had cats, and it sounded equally phenominal.

Shoot Alfredo (oss117) a pm. He has a 456 and I think he has a Tubi on it. I know they aren't identical but they are pretty close and should give you a pretty good idea.

Nope, I'm in my 40s. And, while I think the car will probably appreciate in the future, it's not about the money. It's about the sound of 12 cylinders howling as the blacktop disappears in the rear view mirror. It's about high G corners followed by hard acceleration, it's about the perfect sunset on a cruise over the 7 mile bridge. We want to DRIVE!!!!

    No garage queens here :)

love the enthusiasm but unless you are going to the track or doing circles to hit on and off 95 exits and on ramps, you will not be doing any "high g corners".

I have never sat in one, drove one or ever really heard one before. Imagine with an aftermarket exhaust would sound incredible as all fcars.

My 550 had a Tubi, and it is a must get mod for the car, otherwise it's way too quiet, IMHO.

There are two versions of the 550 Tubi. They came out with a new version when the 575 was released. The way I understand it, the 575 version replaced the 550 on Tubi's part list. The newer version on the 550/575 has been reported to have a tendency to drone a bit on highway. I wouldn't know because mine was the prior generation and it sounded absolutely wicked.

Frankly it's an easy job to do the Tubi mufflers and I'd just install them. If you don't like it, you can re-sell them easily.

As for Mark Gold's 550.... He's got a lot more than just Tubi's on it, so there is no way you can't go by the sound of that car. If I recall, he replaced the entire exhaust from the headers down with a race system. It's the most evil sounding V12 Ferrari I've ever heard.

Thanks for the heads up!! We will definately have to take a listen to Mr Gold's, if we get the chance. But, having grown up wit a 250SWB Comp car, I do have a prejudice when it comes to the sound :)

There may be an update to this thread soon. And we do have to sell the 328 before we can make a purchase :)
