I am wondering what maintainance costs have been for 550 owners who drive their cars, rather then just look at them in the garage. I intend to drive 3-4000 miles per year including some faster driving through the canyons etc. on FCA events in California. I am seeing a lot of 550s for sale with very low milage and am wondering if the thought of repairs and depreciation is keeping these cars in the garage ? any comments would be appreciated.

for cars that sit around a lot, check the fuel lines/system. almost every ferrari i have bought has had some kind of problem in this area. i bought after they had been sitting for about a year with little driving.

As I said somewhere else, $1 a mile for repair/service costs.

Also be very careful with low mileage 550s. There are a number of problems that do not manifest themselves, e.g., motor mounts and plenum hoses, until many miles up the road.

A Ferrari Service person mentioned that if I drive a 550 quickly through the local canyons, that I would be replacing motor mounts and shock pieces regularly( like once a year). Do you think this is true ?

This question is very vague (how quickly? how many miles per annum? how are the roads in your canyons?). I can only say from personal experience that my 2000 car seems to be fine, now having driven 20k miles total and 6,000 miles alone this year including over the Alps and through Tuscany. So, no, I would not say that statement reflects reality unless your roads are very bad.

No, I think your service guy is way off. First of all, there are known issues with both but both have been redesigned and most owners have swapped out the OEMs for the improved components. I've noticed no wear or diminished performance with the new hardware.
