Does anyone here know what symptoms would appear if a wheel speed sensor were to fail or get clogged with dirt?

    Thanks,

    Dave

You would get a fault on the applicable system, either ABS or ASR or both. It will show on the MFD. I believe either sys will deactivate itself if a speed signal fault is detected. It seems like that is a toxic fault and the systems are usually designed to do that in the case of a toxic fault.

Would the speedometer fail as well?

Also...due undoubtedly to Italian electronics, SD2 was unable to read ABS/ASR sector. Could only read Motronic OBD2...no errors.

My symptoms: speedo & odo stopped working; BRAKE warning light is on in upper left of dash; ABS does not work; ASR does not work. So I am self-diagnosing as wheel speed sensor failure.

    Whaddaya think, Brian?

ABS warning light will stay on, also, if it's a rear sensor the speedo may stop working I think.

ABS light is NOT on. Repeat: NOT on.

The SD2 will not work on many systems from the OBD plug under dash on most pre 360's. You will have to go to the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) plug and those are all over the car. I don't have a 550 laying around to look at to refresh my memory, they are looking for a small 3 wire plug that matches the lead on the SD2. I would look at the harness near the ABS unit and down in the right footwell. IIRC there is a diagnostic protocol that relates to which lights are on and which ones are not. I will have to resort to reading to remember that one. I have to go early tonight so if you don't hear today I will get back tomorrow.

Thanks, Brian. We found the plug harness for the ABS down in the passenger footwell, near the fusebox. Still wouldn't read...

Bummer, evidently the planets are not correctly aligned. I will look into the other avenue.

In add. to the wheel speed sensors, is there a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that draw a reading off the differential/axle? if your ODO went out it might the VSS, while your speedo dying might be the wheel speedsensor. Can you swap in working pieces, one at a time, to empirically trouble shoot?
