I am planning to fit a Tubi to my 550 at the next service (only the rear mufflers, without the middle piece. I want to leave the cats in place to avoid serious police trouble).

The problem is that I have some fairly dreadful neighbours. They once already had a secret meeting to decide whether to "restrict" usage of my car after I started my F355 at 4 AM in the garage for a 5-hours drive to the Nurbürgring :) the resonance on the walls must have been something at 4 AM :D :D :D Anyway, now I'm worried I'll start getting hassled for the 550 if I "Tubi" it. And one of my neighbours is a cop that could force me to take the tubi off if it's too loud...

The question: is it louder than a F355 at idle, or could I manage a hush-hush 1000rpm getaway without waking up the neighbours? If anyone has direct experience please enlighten me...

The garage of my old house opposed my "Neighbor from Hell's". I used to relish the moment as she flew out of her garage at 1 am with her curlers flying, foaming at ther mouth, screaming at me to shut it off!

I would always remind her as politely as possible to get the **** away from my driveway before I called the police...like she did on me the day I moved in(for blocking my own driveway)!

ALSO: Buy it used for $1500 tops! Don't let the dealer rip you off!

Great advice, I'll do that. I know people here in Switzerland have taken off their Tubis, I should find one used somewhere. A friend used his car every morning to go to work, until his retired, half-deaf neighbours (and note that he lives in an isolated villa on Lake Lugano - his neighbours were not that close!) complained that they were being woken up every morning by their windows vibrating! He took his tubi off and bought a mini cooper to go to work... sadly he has long since sold the tubi.

Yes I think I'll enjoy annoying certain unpleasant people :D

You're right, but if once a year I take the car out at 4AM to go to the 'Ring Ferrari event they shouldn't complain. It's not as if I run a full dyno curve in my garage every night!

Well, I wasn't going push it into the garage just for her....

She did start the feud, however.

Anything with a tubi is too loud for the neighbors and the street in general.... too loud for my wife to ride in ever and too loud for me to drive more than 20 minutes or so....ear plugs help.....there is a reason you can find them used pretty cheap. Your exerience my vary :)

Probably.. one of mine used to complain about our cars, which had what I'd consider to be "mild" exhaust systems on them. Roommate got home from work late and the neighbor made some remark out his window about the (non)noise.

I pulled my car into the garage, uncorked the exhaust, did a brake stand and took off with tires blazing down the street. By the time I got back I found the guy screaming at the top of his lungs.. once he came back to Earth we calmly explained that we did this only to demonstrate our ability to make a lot more noise than he ever imagined and that we are, in fact, trying to "keep it down".

Of course, the ****** never saw a problem with blaring his sax out the window until 12am.

In 1990 I was working second shift and often road my brand new and box stock Kawasaki ZX6. With EPA regs, the jetting was quite lean, so the only way to ride the thing was to do what the manual said, and start it with the choke and let it warm up for several minutes. I would leave work at about 11:30, sometimes 12 with the guy who lived across the street hanging out his window screaming about the noise. He called my boss. Then called the police…who sat hiding the next night and pulled me over. The officer told me they had a complaint about me leaving work screaming down the road on a bike with ridiculously loud exhaust, speeding and riding recklessly. I pointed out to the officer that the parking lot for work was literally less than 50 feet from the stop sign/tee at the end of the road, so it would be flat impossible for me to be speeding leaving work even if I trying and also called his attention to the DOT/EPA approve factory exhaust system. He told me he was waiting with his windows down and never heard me coming, but ask that I do anything I could to keep the revs down until I get out on the main street.

The moral is that people trying to sleep are pretty sensitive to loud vehicles. Motorcycles and Ferraris are louder than more cars to begin with. Personally I don’t see any reason to make the problem worse. A tubi doesn’t add any power, in fact the graphs I’ve seen show that they hurt the low and mid range….so why on earth would you want to annoy the world (OK, not the whole world, but most people you drive near), make you car slower, and spent a ton of money doing it? It just doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve got a buddy with a Harley speed shop. He has stopped selling or tuning bikes with drag pipes…he just tells them he builds fast motorcycles, not slow motorcycles that are stupid loud.

From what I have heard, the 550 is louder than a 355, lower deeper rumbly loud. With the center pipe it is MUCH louder.

Hmmmm….. I’m beginning to wonder if there are multiple versions of Tubi “loudness”. My 550 has a Tubi and it’s downright pleasant in the cab (with the windows up). I drove it with my wife over 16 hours over a 3 day period when we first bought the car (to get it home). No complaints on interior loudness whatsoever.

Also, it sure seems far less loud then my 360 (Capristo) and any other 355 Tubi car that’s in the local club.

Maybe I’ll go have my ears checked… :)

Check out the sound clips of the those Kries-seig systems with the F1 staight pipe option. They have some video on sound clips on the distributors site... www.discovery-automotive.com

They are pretty mild when they aren't in F1 mode.

Here's how it started. The very day we moved in, I had my wife's car parked perpendicular to the garage door in my own driveway. She actually called the parking enforcement to come and ticket the car. I saw the metermaid getting out of her car and ran outside to confront her. The neighbor came out screaming about the rules of the neighborhood. Mind you I had NEVER laid eyes on this woman before. I showed the MM the boxes and the moving van around the corner and she left. This woman said she would get me later!

    Issues?

So from then on, at my convenience, I'd idle the Tubi'd 550 as long as it would require to get her bedroom light to come on.

    Haha.. nice

I on the other hand have a very cool neighbor with young kids. I was in the driveway wiping down my Porsche and he came over and said

“very nice car I always admire the way it sounds”

    I say “Thank You”

    he says “its very loud”

I say “yeah its the custom exhaust”

he says “did you know that’s my children’s bedroom?”

    I said “oh?”

he says “have a great day and again very beautiful car”

Now I flip off the lights and try and coast up the driveway if I come in late.
