Did that WSR actually sell ? The RMS results still show this Lot at the 230 - 250 K€ estimate price, together with a sprinkling - perhaps - of other DNSs, whereas most of the rest of the cars have the sale price stated ?

Probably not. Do a search on my story on the 550 on the Zoute sale last September. Same story.

It is getting old. Auction houses need to stop bull****ting. This is not ebay you know.

If there was no reserve it's a binding sale, is it not?

Looks awfully like another case of the house bidding a car up in an attempt to clear the unwritten reserve price which is presumably related to the bottom end of the range (although no reason why the two numbers should be the same).

See this thread from post #217 to #230 although it was Bonhams at their 2016 Route sale in Knokke-Heist.

P.S. I once looked into the issue and found that if a lot does not sell at one of these prestige auctions, the vendor may be liable to pay a reduce fee based on the mid point of the estimate range... This seems sensible as it acts as a deterrent where vendors might otherwise push for, lets call them 'optimistic' estimate ranges in the hope that it will draw the attention of buyers with deeper pockets who might not otherwise have considered the lot if it was seemingly too inexpensive for their taste.

With two no sales, it is now possible that the vendor of this car may have already had to cough-up +/- EUR25k or so in such charges...

Not if the last bidder was a RM drone on the other side of the line.

What Mogulboy described, but a serious case of an auction house bidding up until it breaks and they are left with the car.

In these cases the auction house and the vendor have a common goal.

I am getting the hang of it after a number of auctions. The key thing is to understand whom you are bidding against.
The no reserve works as lever but to make sure nobody (except the buyer) walks away frustrated straw-men are introduced. They are not needed up to a certain stage but when the last bid stalls before the imaginary reserve they pop-up.

So when I bid to 100 and the bids stalls and all of a sudden "new bidder" steps in (usually on-line or phone) I know the straw-man has woken up. Time to go. Or you trow in a last bid to see if you where close to the elusive reserve. If the straw-man bids again without hesitation you know you are still a long way off.

Meh, it's a big ask for a highish mile 550 in lipstick. Vendor should be asking 160k euros and even then, he'd be doing well. I'd pay a 10 per cent premium to transform my 550 into a WSR, at most, and that would be way under these prices for a car with 4000 miles.

They did make a 550 which actually did have more power, etc. It's called a 575.

I see no harm in letting these run and they will naturally find their own level but if this 33,800 mile RHD WSR car actually makes its low estimate, it would equal the (shocking at the time) price paid for the slightly lower miles (40,707kms) Rosso Corsa LHD WSR that sold at Brooklands in March 2015 (see post #4 above) and equal the price achieved by the (shockingly low miles) Argento 550 that sold at Silverstone's 2016 Salon Privé sale.

Another high price. This was evidently a good weekend to sell Maranellos in the UK.

Bargain for a one of nine car where one only comes up for sale every two to three years.

It depends on your perspective. That money is nearing the price of a manual 575 with the same mileage and FHP.

I'd be surprised if it hits 190k. Great spec though.
