575 motor mounts also wear out

Just got an email from my mechanic advising that my 2004 575M motor mounts are worn out and sagging. That is on a car with 40k miles. Motor mounts on non exotica last the life of the vehicle. Another hate in the love/hate of Ferrari ownership.

 

Not really - the Porsche's I have owned 944, 928, Cayenne eat up motor mounts like nothing.

It is a piece of rubber holding a large, heavy, twisting, heat radiating object, it is obvious they have a life cycle.

 

My 427 Holden Ute with double the distance has the original motor mounts with life left in them.

 

My were changed at 11000.
Must be the heat.

 

They are a consumable item. I replace them all the time in Benz and BMW. And they are are more expensive then the ferrari mounts. Double in some cases.

 

The common theme seems to be Yank tanks have longer lasting motor mounts than European cars.

 

I was advised before my last track event with my 575 that one of the motor mounts was soft (dry was the word used actually). I wonder how concerned I should be? They told me its fine for now. I have about 36000 miles on the Odometer.

 

Not sure I agree with this conclusion either. In most of the yank tanks people just don't look or don't care. The mounts are shot but they don't replace them. The drive line gives you a lot of play so the motor can move around without much impact.

 

My engine and transmission mounts had to be replaced on my '05 575M HGTC car that I just bought and the car had almost 14000 miles.

 

so then the question is are the 575 mounts superior to the 550 mounts ?

 

In quality, I would expect it and this thread would suggest no - but yes in the sense of what happens if they fail they are superior (support of the engine, for instance to avoid the oil sender to contact the anti-roll bar).

Corvette owners use aftermarket mounts that are supposed to be far superior to the OEM ones. I wrote to two of the companies to see if they would be interested in making mounts for the 456-575 series and never received an answer from either.

F430s have similar mounts to the 575M and they do not last too long, either. The 575M mounts are, however, far superior to those on the earlier 65 degree V12s.

 

The mount quality is not the issue, it is the design. I am not sure anyone could make a mount that survives a long time placed under a direct tension/compression load and still provide vibration isolation. Mercedes among others did the same with the same results. It seems Americans seem to be the only ones who know how to mount a large motor with a lot of torque.

Besides, mounts are rubber and some degree of age deterioration should be expected. Just not every 3 years.
