I'm not sure if it is just me, but I've had very bad luck with the stereos in both my previous 550 (died several times) and my current 575 (died creatively several times). Most recently, yesterday, I was driving along listening to a little Jay-Z at moderate volume when suddenly the stereo went to max volume, nearly blasting my eardrums out. At the same time, the head unit display went blank and the on/off and volume controls stopped functioning. I had to stop the car at a bus stop on a busy street, open the trunk, and remove the CD cassette to stop the deafening music. Bystanders were very amused...

A similar thing also happened about 2 months ago when I was listening to music and suddenly the head unit would not respond, wouldn't turn up, down, on/off...nothing. At that time I also had to eject the CD mag to stop the stereo. Problem is, I then had to leave the car unused for 2 weeks and I think that somehow the stereo must still have been draining juice from the battery, as the battery was totally flat the next time I tried to start the car. Alarm was dead and the doors would not shut properly.

I think that the stereo might still be "partly" on now, as even when there is no display on the head unit, I can hear the radio interference from my Blackberry over the system. Which worries me, as I don't want another dead battery.

The history of the stereo is this: When I bought the car from a Ferrari dealer (2nd hand), it had a Sony head unit installed, mated with the stock Becker CD changer, etc. I asked the dealer to order the OEM head unit and install, and they did, although apparently with some strange results.

When I asked the mechanic at the dealer why this problem happened (the first time), he just explained that "sometimes the stereos in the 575s and 360s just turn themselves on!" No explanation why, just this mysterious statement.

Has anyone had a similar problem or a suggested solution, other than bringing it back to the dealer for them to "quick fix" yet again? Much obliged...

Robie- No idea, but I would pull the fuse to prevent a reoccurrence until fixed. The stereo documentation should tell you where you can send it to get it fixed. The 456 guys have discovered some good repair shops if your documentation has no US dealers. Sounds like an internal short. I never turn mine on.

Thx, Terry, pulled the fuse. Might just stop using the stereo from now on. Getting a major soon, maybe I'll have them look into it then.

frefan- If you think the radio was bad, imagine trying to navigate with that teeny screen if you had the nav system.

Robie- Glad the fuse provided a temporary fix. Lots worse things could happen. Exhaust makes way better music anyway.

actually after 22,000 miles I like the 575 more and more and not really interested in 599. I know its a better GT car in many respects but for the money the 575 is just fine for me. my point was its not worth it for a radio upgrade

I would be happy with a crap radio, but the randomness is killing me. May settle for engine music from now on, but sometimes the ladies actually want to have a (closed window) conversation inside the car. Awkward...

My wife does not understand why I love the exhaust note.

Give them an i-pod and enjoy the engine sound.

You are not alone in so much that one night last summer I was driving home listening to my V12 when the radio comes on...loud. Scared the s*it out of me. I turned it off. I hit a little pot hole in the road 2 miles on and the the low beam head lights flicker and the radio sqauks up again. I am thinking...dicky electrics pheww the last thing you want on a $200K plus car. But then it ran fine all summer. Any way I am taking the car for some work to the dealer in October trailing another car when I see the headlight flicker in the reflection and the same thing happens the radio squawks up. I pull over to check to see if the lamp is lit I pop the bonnet to have a quick look, isn't it amazing how people love to see Ferrari's and other super cars in trouble? But it was fine. Told the dealer who said he'd check but nothing!

Such occurences are common when an item doesn't have a proper grounding (earth) but if you have ever looked at the back of a Ferrari 575 dash you wouldn't want to go hunting for a fault in there! Not unless forced.

As for the headlamp I have tried everything barr kicking the car to see if there is a bad earth somewhere but to no avail.

Still not as annoying as the tyre pressure sensing device!
