    Hey all,

My 575 will be here soon! One of the few things found during PPI is a bad H20 temp sensor. I'm wondering if anyone here has changed their sensor (I'm sure ) and if there are any difficulties involved. If I'm correct in my thinking, it should just slot into the water pump and be fairly close to the front of the engine, no?

I'd like to not have to put the car in the shop the instant I get it, so any advice is appreciated!

Depends which sensor. There are two temp sensors under the intake manifold that control the fans. The 3rd is the temp gauge sender. You will have to take the intake manifold off if it’s one of the 2 sensors that control the fans. With my 550, I knew the primary water temp sensor went bad because the fans all of a sudden started to turn on at a higher water temp. I changed all 3 while I was in there. Did the PPI specify which sensor is bad?

I think the temp sender in the side of the thermostat housing is only on earlier 575s. Looking at the photos in your PPI thread, I don’t see it there on yours. Not sure if on the later cars it was incorporated into the 2 sensors under the intake.

    Thanks for the reply!

I suppose all three of those sensors just throw a P0116 code?

I don’t know. I diagnosed mine by it’s behaviour, I don’t know if the 575 operates exactly as the 550, but you should be able to narrow it down by checking if a) the temp gauge works properly, and b) if the fans come on as they should, come on late, or not at all.

You have to remove the intake manifold to replace those two sensors (might as well do both since the big cost is labor to remove the intake manifold). That is a good time to upgrade to the new rubber coated metal gasket for the manifold if you still have the paper gaskets. At engine number 72331 (~SN 131XXX), the 575M changed from the thermostat cover with a temperature sender to the 456/456M style cover that is plain except for the bleed valve. The sensors are only ~$27 each from Ricambi.

Terry, does the 575 after 72331 use only 2 sensors instead of 3 like 550s and earlier 575s?

Affirmative, only two, like the 456/456M.

OK...I'm fairly adept at taking the 348 apart, but there are all kinds of "how to's" over there and I'm far from a real wrench :) On the 575, is this pretty easy or am I better off having a shop do it?

Chupa, if you are "far from a real wrench" removing the intake manifold on a V12 may be best left to a knowledgeable technician.

From another post you made recently I gather you live in the Hampton Roads, VA area? If so PM me so I can share some info on trusted independent shops in this area (I live in Hampton Roads as well).

It's pretty easy. You will need a magnetic 10mm socket with swivel joint to do this. Also it helps to have a friend handy to lift off and then put back the intake. I've done it on my own, but it is a bit awkward without help.
