Web site for FOLI, Experience Auto group "vintage service pricing " lists oil change 195, full annual fluids 995, belt service at 3900 clutch at 2700 etc. I have used them and they are very reliable with no surprises or up charges. I highly recomend.

John, on another car, I've heard them "clicking" or "clacking" on start up until they pump up. I assume this is the tell-tale or is there something else?

That's it Philip. I have a V12 beemer motor that does the same thing on a really cold day, or after it's been sitting, but BMW says it's "normal".

I don't know if Moorfan mentioned whether his were noisy and that's why he checked them, or he just decided to check and then found that many of them didn't pass.

Taz, I haven't heard if Dave's still doing these or not. Although he's still checking the site, he hasn't posted since December. Probably having more fun playing with his Boxer than posting on FChat......

The Europeans still have not figured out hydraulic lifters.

I don't know why they just don't buy some of ours and copy them.

They did the same with automatic transmissions. We had great autos and they kept experimenting with junk for another 20 years.

They have a very serious case of "Not thought of here".

    True story
In 1953 or so a Mercedes race department engineer figured out, while riding home on the streetcar, a way to open and close valves without use of springs. He drew it up and presented it to Rudi Uhlenhaut, the head of race engineering. They built a small working model and powered it with a lathe to test. Excited about the discovery, Uhlenhaut told the legal department to start the patent process. The legal dept reported back that during the patent search he discovered Mercedes had been racing against cars so equipped since the 20's. The French who invented it called it "Desmodromique".

Does anyone know whether the 5Y interval belts would fit in a 1995 456 GT?

Well said. There are unique circumstances for every car. You can't blindly follow the book or others recommendation. These types of services need to be tailored to each cars needs.

George- Yes they do fit a 456 and are the recommended replacement and you probably already have them fitted. If your car has an Assembly Number of 26813 or lower, you should consider changing the tensioner brackets at your next belt change, number 31 below, and you will have all the 5 year interval parts that came on the 575 and 612.

Thank you Taz, I actually picking up my car today from the shop I had it for belt change. I changed them 3 years ago (by a different garage admittedly) and was advised to do it again. I looks like it is relatively common knowledge but I was not aware that the latest belts last 5 years. I will enquire today about the exact type of belts they fitted and when the next service should be due.

George- Be advised Ferrari still recommends 3 years for the 456, 456M, and 550, but likely only because they did no testing on those cars. To me, if you have all 5 year parts...

But that is only an amateur's opinion.

With all the best people posting !

Terry, I was told by both Penske-Wynn (Kevin) and The Auto Gallery (Eric) that as you say, with all the 5 year parts my 550 is good for 5 years.

    Cheers,

    Bill

i can understand the 30k miles but not the time constraint. if you hardly drove a car for five years, what exactly is wearing out? just curious...

Belts would be in better shape if she were driven a bunch over that five years.

    Belt change service next week.
Last year, my 575 also had the following:
    Oil and filter change
    Brake fluid change
    Coolant change

What should I ask them to do while they are doing the belts? I will ask for annual oil change, I presume brake and coolant are okay for more than one year, what about gearbox oil (it’s a manual). Thanks

Affirmative, add power steering fluid every two years, too. Aux belts every three years.

Thanks Taz. I will add those. Auxiliary belts presumably not a big job if they are doing the timing belts anyway?

Darius- Affirmative, aux belts have to be removed to do the cambelts, so no additional charge, just parts.

Great thread, I just hit 30K on my 575. I now know a little more of what to look/ask for. Thanks all. Cheers.
