    Is this guy for real??

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-steering-wheel_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34200QQitemZ4580984548QQrdZ1

An exact replica of the wheel used by Mike Hawthorn and Petter Collins on all of their cars. both Sport and Grand Prix. This exacting and flawless replica is modeled after the Hawthorn driven Ferrari GP car that won the 1958 world drivers championship, and the constructors championship for Ferrari. Mr. Ferrari removed the wheel and gave it to Hawthorn. The last time the wheel was seen was in 2001, in Switzerland when it sold for $59,000.

He only wants $3000 for it!!

How the hell would you authenticate this thing?

The $3000 sale price is for an exact replica of the authentic wheel.

    Yep.

Caught that. I just thought it was humerous that someone would sell a replica wheel of a real wheel that Ferrari gave to some dude for doing a good job in a race car.

But, I guess my question remains, how do you even know what the supposed $59K wheel looks like, and who would want a fakey-do of it? For $100 maybe, for $3k, forgeddaboudit.

The only thing really unique about the repro is that the wheel is flat. Nearly all aftermarket steering wheels have a dish to them. The old 53-62 Corvette steering wheels were flat with no dish and it's pretty hard to find any aftermarket wheel that is flat. I have a couple that I found at a swap meet that were made back in the 60s or 70s by California Custom. They have wooden rims like Ferraris and other European cars. Some Chinese Army factory could probably crank them out for $9.95 each. (For $10.95 they would probably throw in a bootleg Ferrari emblem.)

    Arlie,

Also note the 4 spoke configuration. Hawthorn insisted on 4 spoke wheels, not sure why.

The seller is Mark Wallach. He makes new period type wheels as well as restoring the originals. Best in the business. I have used his services many times.

If memory serves me correctly he married a European Countessa and used to be one one of the Le Mans Porsche Team Managers back in the 50s. Incredible photographer. Killer stories.

If my old Maserati ever needs wheel work...he is my first phone call.

    Cheers,

    Bill Noon

Both of them are very nice and his wheels are very special. He's also quoted in "Inside Ferrari" about what the Ferrari Race Shop was like on the day.

So, if you're really in the know, you'd know this item.

Seems kind of odd to see on ebay, but I guess with $300 blank keys, $3700 fobs and $6000 sets of books, and now with the addition of $3000 replica steering wheels, we've seen it all.

Having said that, would you guys pay over $3k for one of his steering wheels??

Mark Wallach is definitely one of the good guys. I have talked to him on a few occasions and he is a true gentleman. I understand that not only is he a craftsman but he is well published. He is also an encyclopedia of Ferrari information. That 4 spoke wheel is a one-off as far as I know. The work is done using the old methods. If you had a vintage Ferrari that took this wheel, considering the overall cost of the investment, $3,000.00 is well in line.

It's stupid enough to think that someone would pay $59k for the real item. Who cares?!

Is Waltrip dead yet? I wonder what his sun glasses will go for?

Oh, how about the very jock strap Joe Montana wore when he won the 89th superbowl!

I'm curious as to why the reproduction wheel has a rivited rim. I've been looking at some old pictures, and it appears that both Collins and Hawthorn used a wheel with an inlaid detail, not rivits. Is this a reproduction of a specific wheel used by a specific driver at a specific event in a specific year?

The color picture is Collins in the 1956 Mille Miglia. The b/w picture is Hawthorn's car at Monza in 1958.
