So have an intermittent backup sensor problem - rear middle, that works sometimes, then does not... The dealer gave me a quote .... which was crazy, they noted that the sensor seems to be the issue... anyone ever replaced this on your own? I'm assuming the bumper has to come off etc... how hard is that?

I've decided to live with the warning ... since I only back up out of my drive most of the time, but was thinking if it's just time vs. difficulty I may tackle something like this on my own.... a little winter project... ?

Yes, replacement involves removing the rear bumper , there is no room to squeeze your hand in as is. First take photos and measure all gaps so you can realign properly on reassembly. Then remove rear underbodv panel, rear wheels and wheel arch inserts. There are 4 bolts holding the bumper on, one in each rear corner of wheel arch - hidden behind exhaust bracket (so remove bracket). And the other 2 are inside the trunk and have shims for adjustment. Put a jack under bumper to lower down slowly onto blankets. Oh yes, also 2*2 bolts on the sides of the wheel arch obvious to see and easy to get at.
Look at ricambi or algar parts diagrams .
Probably about 2 hours work to remove once you have done it before!
    Regards,
    Ron

Been changing eye drops to improve fwd/back sensors: 599 sensors will NOT in typical US lots prevent front bumps. But, hen again, I park in the handicap zones so a bit better off.

You're correct replacing a backup sensor typically involves removing the bumper to access the sensor housing. Start by identifying the specific location of the faulty sensor—some are part of the bumper, while others are mounted separately.
Once the bumper is off, you can access the sensor. Simply unplug the old sensor and install the new one, following the reverse order of removal. Conduct a test before reassembling everything to ensure the new sensor is working seamlessly. You can do this by engaging the reverse gear and checking for any error messages.
Carefully reattach the bumper, ensuring all fasteners are secure. Some vehicles may require sensor calibration after replacement. After reassembly and calibration, do a final test to confirm that the backup sensor is functioning as expected.
