I've seen some specs of the new 599 which seem to indicate it has a special fluid in the dampers. Is this the first appearence of an electro-rheological fluid in the dampers of a production car?

Not quite. To my knowledge the Z06 uses a similar technology.

It's Delphi technology used in Cadillacs, Corvettes and other cars in the GM family. Ferrari found it to be the best solution available, especially fully sorted and ready to go. Married to the 599's wonderful engine and transmission (and great tires as well), it makes for the perfect handling package.

Interesting, I'd heard that Honda were working on it, but it used too much electrical power to be practical?

I'd be interested in more info on this Delphi system if you have it?

    here you go...

the hardware in the 599 is essentially similar to the ones in GM cars...however, an important difference in the Ferrari lies in its software programming, Delphi and Ferrari worked to optimize it for the 599's platform...and programmed for roll, dive, etc...while the software in the ZO6 and others does not account for as many aspects in the handling dept... as we all have seen, this approach has been hugely successful in the 599.

Technically, the Delphi system isn't used in the Z06. It's used in the F55 package for the base Corvette.

From what I've read, the Corvette engineers believed that the programing for dampers, as well as the dampers themselves, at the time of the Z06's development weren't ready for the type of driving the Z06 was meant for. So, they opted to use a transverse leaf spring set up. They may still consider using it for the next generation Corvette if the technology has advanced enough for their expectations of the car's performance.

Also, at this time, GM can't use Ferrari's set up because it is proprietary.

ah, no Magneto shocks in the ZO6, thanks for the clarification. i was under the impression that the Magneto shocks were used throughout the entire Corvette range, good to know all the facts as i don't really follow Corvettes... yes, the software Delphi and Ferrari developed is unique for the hardware thus far... Ferrari themselves have stated that refining the 'electronic' side of things, for engine management, ride control, drivetrain, etc, is what they are putting much effort into, as there is much left to improve. whereas the hardware improvements are harder to do, with relatively matured technology in that aspect. Can't wait to see what the hard/soft ware engineers come up with next...
