So I've just picked up my 599 f1 today....and the first thing I notice is that (for me at least) it is a COMPLETELY different drive to the 575 - makes my 575 feel like a go kart in the lightness of steering

Anyway, the question I had is how have people found the optimal way to manage the gears to minimise clutch wear

    Most specifically for

    1) moving along in slow continous traffic - I'm my 575 I would wait for some space, switch to first, hit the pedal, and within a couple of seconds switchback to neutral and coast - the 599 seems to be ok just crawling in 1st or am I just being deceived by how unworn the cltch is (3k miles om the clock)

    2) stationary at the lights - In my 575 always I'm neutral, same for the 599 or can u be in first?

    3) in motion between 30 to 70. In my 575, I would nearly always be in neutral going into turns for example, once I had finished accelerating, only reengaging the gear once I needed to accelerate again - 599 doesn't seem to like that - seems to prefer,to be in gear at all times

    Both cars are paddle shifts

Apologies if these questions are a little inane, i am certainly not one to claim I can sit in a car and know instantly how to treat it!

Thanks very much in advance for any help

    1) It is alright to leave in gear. Plus you never want to be in neutral in case you need to get out of the way before someone rear ends you.

    2) Neutral is ok, but leaving the car in gear is safer in my opinion. If left in gear, just make sure the car is not rolling backwards (if you are on a hill) and keep your brake on when you begin to accelerate from a standstill.

    3) I don't think it is very safe to be in neutral while going into turns. You should be in gear and either decelerating with some engine braking or accelerating through the corner.

I would not worry about saving the clutch versus driving safely.

I am no expert, but have gained some knowledge from f-chat. The general consensus is that if you are at a standstill, it is ok to be in gear. It does not wear the clutch. As far as driving techniques, to each his own. It is probably better staying in gear. The clutch wears when transitioning from stop to go. Feathering the throttle starting from a stop wears it more than getting on the gas more aggressively. Reverse is bad on the clutch. Reversing uphill is very bad. Other than that, I am sure you will find your groove with that bad boy!
    How 'bout some pics!

BTW, welcome to f-chat and congrats on the 599.

SKXF is right on the money. I only go into neutral when parking or at a very long stand still. Always in gear when turning. In stop and go I keep it in 2nd gear just to conserve gas.

The 599 has a very tough dual plate clutch and the 575M has a much shorter life, single plate clutch. Trying to maximize clutch life is not as big a deal on the 599 or 612 OTO as it is on a 575M.

True. Getting 60K+ miles out of a 599's clutch shouldn't even be a a challenge.
