So this past Saturday was not a great day. I went to FOA's monthly get-together and watched Qualifying, hung out with the guys talk cars etc... the Car ran great.

Get in the car and instead of taking I 285 all the way due to construction I took a different route home, across Hwy 92. there are lots of stop lights. The car ran great I was almost to I 575 - when I noted some smoke coming from behind me. Initially I thought "someone must be smoking" then I saw it was coming from me! I was sitting at a red light on a slight grade. The car had no warning lights on, so at first, I thought maybe the polish I used on the exhaust tips did not come off and that is what was smoking. so I pulled over into the first parking lot I could. When the car downshifted from 3 -2-1 it the gearbox warning light came on - and gear unavailable, showed up and the car hesitated as I was pulling into a parking slot. I shut the car off.

I got out and checked where the smoke was coming from - and noted that it was coming from both sides under the wheel well - and out of the vent just before the rear wheel. I then saw some small drops of fluid but was not sure if it was me or AC condensate etc...

so went to start it again -it started in Neutral - but no gears. so then I had it towed to FOA - currently awaiting the bad news.

When the flat bed came - there was a pretty good size oil stain under the car, you could see it dripping a bit from the car when it was on the flat bed. I did not hit anything but I did hit a pot hole earlier in the day... almost impossible to avoid in Atlanta.... and I had crossed some railroad tracks just before I noticed the smoke... but they were not really that bad. I had the car in Sport Mode....

I guess FOA will figure it out... I'm praying it not a catastrophic cost issue... but we'll see. just wondering if it can be just a line? or is it likely to be more? 2008 w 32K miles.

So sorry! What's the history on this car? Serviced regularly? Mileage?

yep all services done - has 32K miles, no stories that I know of ... has run great. my only issues that I know of:

    1. some seeping on a cam seal... very minor - Mechanic at FOA - just sys to monitor it.
    2. one engine mount sagging - going to change out at next service
    3. TFT screen occasionally - 1-2 times a year goes out.
    4. occasional Parking sensor failure - or Electrical System failure ... clears up with restart ( usually happens after I have the car waxed.)

When was the clutch replaced? If not, what was the last wear reading and at what mileage?

Tom- Is it possible you blew a line going to the transmission oil cooler?

I'm going with Clutch master line, or a gearbox leak at the rear.

Tell FoA to "bump" my SA out to make way for your 599....I am in no rush....lol.

A couple of years ago my 599 had some shifting issues....it would default to neutral at a stop. The shop diagnosed it to loose bleed screws leaking fluid. Hope your issue is as simple as that!!!

I suffered something similar in the past.
It was an hydraulic hose pipe into the gearbox.
Replaced, reloaded and pretty much that was it.

I doubt this would cause the inability to select gears though. Must be something on the F1 circuit. Hopefully as simple as a loose bleed screw, which seems to happen quite often on the 430's.

So heard back from FOA yesterday. Looks like a line is leaking to the Gear box... - leaked out all the fluid - high-pressure line. So going to replace that line and see how it goes. if I have another one - I'll do all the rest ... not exactly cheap!

I guess my guess was on the money post 7

I am starting to see these lines go now ..more in the f430/360 than on the 599

There are places that make them instead of using the Ferrari part ..major difference in price

Here is just an example of the whole set

oh come on, I was, am, and will use these parts.
Actually, the ferrari parts are too expensive too be true.

These hydraulic hoses and connectors exist in the industrial world for more than a century and costs big companies about $5 each. Total of $30 each in costs. Even that is an over-estimate.

Affirmative, owners have used Goodridge hydraulic hoses with good luck. This group works with NASCAR and other race leagues and can provide whatever you need if you give them a sample of exact specs. They provided a complete set of F1 hoses for around $500.

So, you know, its no wonder I got a full set of these hoses in China for less than US $70. ( in hong kong, maybe US $300)
it really costs next to nothing

I took the car for a quick ride last evening, and had forgot how savage it can be.... on a normal highway, it went from 45 mph to 85ish and back to 40 in just a few seconds... its finally nice outside so you can have the windows down, and hear the engine & exhaust note... its just still staggering how quick they are....
