Is there a technical reason for the car to "explode"to life on startup. Not that I mind but just wondering. Mike

I've always assumed this was (1) to ensure a start every time by overcompensating with revs and (2) to get moving on heating the cats (primarily) and engine/oil (secondarily) before driving off.

On cold startup, the ECU sends more fuel. I love when I start my Maserati GT cold - very nice rumble ;-)

I think the "explosion" sound that comes with a startup is because the default setting on the exhaust system is "wide open" on startup, then after a couple of seconds the rear bypass valves close for a quieter sound, only opening again when you rev past 5,000rpm.
Getting the "skunk boys" exhaust controller allows you to manage the sound any way you like !

First the mixture is very rich, and then the ECU adds an air by secondary air pump to exhaust to fast heat cats and to avoid their damage.
