I’m looking at a 2008 599 GTB with 12k miles that recently had some sort of engine failure. Ferrari apparently replaced the engine, the gearbox - all brand new. The rest of the car appears to be in great shape. It’s being sold by local Ferrari dealer with 2 year warranty. I’m not sure how to think about this - new V12 drivetrain sounds appealing though also a red flag that likely detracts from value. Curious to know what others think as to how to approach (or run away from) this.

It’s all down to numbers really.
At this point the AD is lifting the value of the car as they did the work, they provide the warranty and they retail the car.
I bought a 5 owner Porsche from Porsche and 1 year later they would not accept it in trade as too many owners.
So if the 599 is very good value and you are not gonna sell for 10 years go ahead. Bear in mind the car will never be a matching numbers car and future buyers will fixate on the replacement engine and gearbox. I’ve also heard of ADs stating missed services are not an issue due to low miles then making a big deal about the missed services when taking the car back in trade.

If the engine failed from abuse, what about the rest of the car? To be honest with the level of competency in general in the industry a major repair of that degree of invasiveness never makes me comfortable. I prefer a car with less history of mechanical intervention.
There is no upside to taking cars apart and reassembling them but there is very large possibilities of a downside.

I'd want to know why engine and gearbox were replaced. I'd also ask how much time has elapsed since the replacement to iron any issues there might be because I'd imagine an engine change on a 599 is hardly a routine job. Yes the warranty will give some peace of mind but its worth asking very specific questions.

Sounds like a no brainer to me!

I would not hesitate in buying it!

When I bought my 2007 GTB, in 2020 it had a new $57k engine installed in 2017 at 12k (and now has 16K)-- I like the fact that the engine is super low miles and have had no issues. IMHO the car is more desirable and should be worth more than a similarly aged 599 just because of the newer engine. Each to his own.
