Terry, they are fantastic piece of engineering, 6,000cc on stick that will be heaven on earth, there is no such car in HK, and only got 5 F430 on stick, out of thousands. Thanks it really open my eyes, but we wont see the 3 pedals on the 458....

Pat- At least one 599 owner says it is hard enough to keep up with the shifting using the F1 shifter, and would be even more difficult with a manual shifter. Sure would be fun to try, though.

About what percentage of 599s are stick? I presume that number is going down every year.

    I can imagine!

The first and second gears feel like two bullet shots at full throttle. It's even hard to find the time to pull the pedals! In fact it's often faster to let the car shift itself when it hits the rev-limited as the computer shifts EXACTLY at the red line in perfect way (it even if you're in manual mode). Full throttle 100ms shifts are so fast and remarkably smooth.

1st BANG! into second....BANG! into third...

Being able to keep your two hands on the wheel is also nice...

Once you experience the 599 everything else you drive has a tendency to feel underpowered...

The 599 shifts itself at redline? That's interesting- the 612 only shifts itself at redline if you're in "Comfort" mode-- in "Sport" mode it bounces off the rev limiter.

Yes, it shifts itself in Sport mode when it reaches the red line (whilst leaving the transmission in manual).

In race mode it just hits the rev limiter.

You're so right! Everything else is positively SLOW now, I have a tedency to drive all other cars at full throttle all the time now because they just cannot measure up to the 599 :D

That explains it. The 612 doesn't have a "Race" mode, just "Comfort," "Sport," and "CST Off."

The 575M bounces off the rev limiter in Normal mode, which is just Sport not selected, and does not shift up. Even hard to keep up with shifts on the 575M, can imagine how much quicker it is in a 599. My C6 Z06 Corvettes were much easier to keep up with because the gearing was so much longer.

Ferraris are geared like drag racers. My old 60s Corvettes had a 2.20:1 ratio in 1st gear in the close ratio gear boxes and 3.70-4.11 axle ratios. Even the wide ratio boxes were 2.56:1, with 3.08-3.55 axle ratios. The 599 is 3.15:1 in first with a 4.18 axle ratio. No wonder they take off like scalded apes and need launch control.
